Would you buy this?

I just ran across a 97' 4runner with 290k miles on it, interior and exterior are perfect, daily driver. I know 4runners can go a long time, but this seems on the high end to me. Getting the details on it later but I am guessing limited 4x4.

My question is would anybody get this as a daily driver? Also, what ballpark is it worth in perfect shape?

That's a lot of miles. There aren't too many 3rd gen runners out there with 300K+ yet so it's virtually unknown how long these trucks will go for after that. Probably only 1 or 2% of all the 3rd gens made have that much mileage on them at this point. Most of the '96-98s are only turning 200K-250K a this point. My '97 has 198K and it runs good.

If I had to guess based off of earlier Toyota trucks (not counting the 3.0), they are getting about 300K average out of the 22R/22RE it seems, and I don't think anyone would argue that the 3.4 isn't every bit as good and probably better than the 22RE. Still, not very many engines can make it to 4 or 500K. If there's one out there that could do it, the 3.4 would be my pick, but that remains to be seen.

With that mileage, I wouldn't offer a dime over $2K.

It is listed for $5000 very negotiable. KBB and Edmunds show it is much cheaper than that, Closer to around $4000.

I personally would not, not with close to 300K on it, you can find other 4runners with half the miles for about the same price if ya look, Ive seen them go for as low as $5K

5K is waaaaaaaay too much. You can get a '97 with 100K less and in great condition for that.

I just paid $5k for a 97, original owner, 4x4 SR5, immaculate inside and out with full maintenance history and receipts for everything ever done, by the dealer, including every oil change. It has 110k on the odo, and honestly looks like it couldnt even have 20k. Every inch of the truck looks new, everything works, and there isnt a blemish or a speck of dirt anywhere in the interior.

The truck in the OP, to me, is at most a $1200 truck. And even at that price, I wouldnt buy it. And anyone looking at vehicles with 300k on the odo for a dd really needs someone else making their car decisions for them IMO.

What you describe above is an amazing deal for $5k. A rare find indeed, so to the Original Poster, don't sit around waiting for something like that.

That being said, I couldn't imagine paying anywhere close to $5k for a vehicle with 300k miles on it, even if it is a 4R.

I just paid 4700 for this SR5 you see in the picture. 170k Miles on it and i still feel like i paid just a tad too much, especially considering the dog shit wheels im in the process of fixing LOL!

Im the person that said its worth $1200. Ive owned over 50 cars and I go by what I feel is the correct value. Sorry, no vehicle with 300k on the odo is worth anything substantial, none. And this is coming from a guy that not only loves 4runners but owns one as well as 2 other vehicles.

Some may say I got lucky with my 4runner purchase, I disagree. I take my time, research, scour ads for weeks or months, and always have cash in hand. If youre not doing the same, youre not a good used car/truck buyer.

dont go for it man, 290k is alot, hella lot actually, i have 260k right now its a 99' but we use to drive long and far with it alot. if u keep up with it then it can last longer

as for the price, i wouldn't pay over 3000 for it, no matter how good condition its in.

Actually miles do mean something no matter how immaculate you keep it, seals, bearings, gaskets can all go bad with that many miles on them. All the little things you "never" have to change or look at during a normal period of ownership, start to go bad. You have to keep in mind that most people who drive around extremely high mileage vehicle bring those vehicles up there themselves and know their vehicle. To me this purchase would just not be justifiable in my book. Some say I overpayed for mine, I payed 12k for my 2002 Limited with 91k on the clock in MINT condition I think it was a steal, but then again some people would never have payed that, but I wanted a 4Runner that I could bring up there myself (mileage wise), so it all depends on the owner and what that owner has planned for it.

So in other words if your planning on keeping this vehicle for a while, then I would say absolutely not.

If this is just a buffer vehicle than I wouldn't pay over 2 for it let alone 5(thats just crazy).

If this 4runner is in really good shape and you can get it for $2,000-3,000 why not? Even if it lasts only 50,000-90,000 more miles you could still swap in another motor for $1,000-2,000 (not sure of actual cost) and come out ahead.

Well I noticed right off the price was way high. Where I live (Ga) I have seen several with around 200k going for around $3500, some much less. Maybe not immaculate condition, but I don't want that anyway. I am looking for one with some body damage, perhaps even a mild wreck.

If this one was selling around $1500-1800 I might take it into consideration as a backup truck, I can't afford more than that without selling my car.


As I am looking a good bit for one, I sometimes run across one like this and just cannot figure how they priced it. I saw another that was listed at $5500 with 221k miles fully loaded SR5 and edmunds and KBB list it around$4000 at best.

I'm sorry if I offended you, it was not my intention. Different vehicles have different values to different people. You say you have 356k on a rusty, beat up 91 but you'd never take less then $1500 for it. That's fair, it's worth that much to you, i'm not saying you're wrong. I'm just saying to me, that truck isn't even worth $1k. And sorry, but miles absolutely do matter to most, and they certainly do to me along with condition. I always look for the cleanest, lowest mileage vehicle I can afford, others have different priorities. Noone is right or wrong.
