Like the title says...

Road trip consists of icy and snowy roads and a little off roading with my wife and 2.5 y/o daughter.

Well...here's the full story...

I was AT THE dealership getting the 30k service done and the tech broke stripped the wheel lock key. He was able to remove the tires using his master lock to perform rotation and put them back on. They ordered a new wheel lock key for me and I was told it would arrive in 2 weeks.

I emphasized that not having a usable wheel lock key is an issue because of the road trip.

They told me to tow it to a dealership if I get a flat and need a tire change.
I'm far from satisfied with this solution.

I asked if I can borrow a master lock key until my new one comes. Dealer says "No".

I asked if they can replace the wheel locks with regular lug nuts until my new key comes. They said they can't because I have a special kind of lug nut that are used on the TRD 17" forged wheels which is not your normal lug nut.

At this point they recommended taking off the locks on each wheel. That's when I literally said "**** it, don't worry about it. Call me when my wheel lock key comes in". I then walked out and left. Not only because I was pissed but mainly because I had to bring my wife to work. If a friggin tech recommends that type of shit... I did not want to waste another second at that place.

Just wanted to see reactions...

It all depends on which one of the 6 lug nuts is the missing one. Can you take pictures of each wheel for us?

I would call the Toyota district representative and report this to them. This is just plain stupid on the dealers part.

No, I wouldn't take that trip w/ the missing lug nuts and no I wouldn't accept what the dealership says. I would go back and politely tell them you've had time to think about it and their proposed solution to their mistake is not acceptable to you. Tell them you insist on having the situation remedied at their expense in your time frame - the correct parts are somewhere, they can pay for expidited shipping/hot shot/ what have you.

If they refuse, POLITELY tell them you do not accept their answers and your are going to call Toyota to file a complaint against the dealership - ask them for the phone number to call. If this doesn't get it resolved, call Toyota and insist.

AGAIN - BE POLITE! Firm but POLITE! If you start cursing and throwing a fit you are giving them the only out they have in this situation.

That's what I would do....

I was polite up until they recommended removing the one lock on each wheel. Just plain stupid. I really have no patience for this type of stupidity. I will call back and deal with it again politely.

Please understand - this isn't a manners lecture, its business. They have messed up their side of the business relationship in a really bad way and they will have to fix it. The only way you can give them an out is to behave in an unprofessional way. There are case where the party at fault actually was attempting to provoke an outburst so that he would have an excuse not to remedy the situation.

Its purely business. You are in the right, you will most likely prevail, unless you screw up and make it personal....

Best of luck to you!

Thanks, I guess I can wait for the new key and pray that I don't get a flat. I don't know...I leave tomorrow and this is the last thing I want to worry about.

Drop ship air freight next day 4 wheel locks is the solution. Trust me, the air bill alone will be enough to make you smile that it is coming out of the dealer's pocket. Better yet, tell the dealership you will get them yourself (I just checked, everybody has the TRD lug kit for the 4Runner, even Amazon!) and take a bill of $180.00 in to the dealership. See how fast they get their own shipped in.

I read the rest of your story, that's horrible to hear the kind of crap they are feeding you at the dealership. I've never owned a set of TRD wheels but I suspect it's probably just the standard slim "tuner style" lug nut, which can be found at almost every auto parts store. Maybe you can take one of your current lug nuts off to the store and try to find a matching one in the meantime?

All you need to do is confirm that the lug nut seat is the same, and the thread pitch is the same. My guess is that it's just a standard conical seat that come on most aftermarket aluminum alloy wheels :)

Good luck on your trip, and stay safe!
