if it was available for sale in the US ?

from what I've read, people seem to really like the diesel option, especially people that tow or go off road, and who wouldn't like the power from a turbo diesel model

So the question is: If Toyota reps were reading this particular thread right now, would you like to tell them its an option you would order, or that its OK with the engine options we have now ...

Funny, I was gonna post a thread about this early. I guess It would depend on options, mpg, and mod-a-bility :)
 
I've had turbo diesel intercooled I-4 on my Surfs. Yeah, they were sort of sluggish, but enough. I got VERY good mileage on the highway with mine. A turbo diesel intercooled I-4 is ALREADY being made in other markets. I guess it's just a matter of getting it EPA certified if there is enough interest.....
 
I'd buy one in a heartbeat but I think the Tundra will get one before us. Diesel is the norm in Europe for SUVs - you cannot even get a RAV4 with gas engine over there.

It would be nice to have the increased mpg, but the extra upfront cost would be significant and with diesel fuel being more than gas now it would take a while to make up the difference. And the newer diesels have a lot more emissions stuff on them which can add extra problems at times. Also when diesels need to be worked on it often costs more. Don't get me wrong I love diesels, I own a 99 Dodge pick-up (cummins powered) with 320,000 miles on it, but I don't know if I would be able to justify the extra cost of one for just a daily driver.
 
Cost dependent of course but yeah, Id get one. The Jeep GC was offered with a Mercedes diesel a couple years ago and its numbers were pretty legit, something similar in a 4R would be awesome.
 
Unless it was a high hp diesel, I would have no interest in a diesel 4runner. so far only hilux surfs have the diesel option in a 3.0 form. I'll just stick with my powerstroke, Dmax, and cummins for diesel.

With all due respect, you are comparing apples and oranges. Cummings diesel are made for heavy duty work. The 3.0 (1KD-FTV) isn't.

IF Toyota is listening: I'm interested!!!!

No, not likely. It'd be cool, maybe, but what price cool? Too high for this guy.

You put a pencil to the cost-of-ownership (in the U.S.) and you cannot cost-justify it. You go out many years just to break even, and that's without maintenance and repairs, which are lots different than gas.

I've owned a diesel, and I doubt I'll do it again.

If I want to spend several thousand more on a Toyota SUV, it'll be a Sequoia.

I really want to want a diesel, but I'm spoiled by the response and acceleration of a gas engine. But looking at Toyota Australia's site, the 3.0L does offer excellent fuel consumption compared to the 4.0L V6. Better fuel efficiency is always good but more importantly is range. I would cetainly buy a diesel 4Runner or any diesel Toyota truck for that matter if I lived in a remote part of the continent.
 
If it had at least 275+ HP and 350+ torque it might be worth it. If it doesn't have at least that...then I'd just stick with my 4.7

The diesel MAY give me a tad bit better mileage, but the fuel also costs more...so they'd have to make it worth my while.

If you're going to use your rig for expedition travel..the diesel would be nice to have for fuel availability.

Would I pay $5000+ more to get a diesel over a gas engine when the truck was new? No.

Would I love there to be a used market with diesel 4runners available? Yes.
 
I definitely would!! Yes they cost more both upfront and possibly repair but the endurance, torque and utility of diesel for long term storage by far outweighs minor cost difference. As an earlier poster stated there is an obvious reason why they use them in Australia where you are on your own possibly for days. reliability counts!
