Incredible, that Toyota would make/assemble Tacomas - their meat and potatoes of historical reliability - in Tijuana.

I guess that explains a lot of the recent reliability issues.

Any guesses if the 6th gen 4R will still be made in Tahara or elsewhere?

My 2007 Tacoma was made in Mexico and I had 0 issues with it. I've heard some of the Mexican plans are better than US plants... That being said my 4Runner being made in Japan has a much better build quality than the Tacomas I've been in.

a very large amount of vehicles are made in mexico for the past number of years.

a vehicle made in mexico doesnt have any reflection upon its reliability
the plants are typically run by management that came from japan or europe.. (wherever the company origins are)

Most of the problem Tacoma's came out of the Texas assembly plant. The GM 1/2 ton trucks are made in Mexico as well as the Rams.

I sell Audi's for a living. I would say that they make a fantastic car and are significantly better than American made vehicles.

However some of our models are made in Mexico.
The Q5 specifically. Our bread and butter SUV

Tacomas are assembled in Mexico and Texas. 4Runners are assembled in Japan. The next generation of Toyota trucks will share a platform and to my knowledge, we don't know where it will be assembled.

That being said, its mostly about the company of origin rather than the hands building it. Company culture theoretically should not change. Tacoma reliability is due to the change in platform from gen 2 to gen 3, not where its built. Same pieces, same machines, different hands. Delta human error of course.

Optima batteries turned to junk once they moved to Mexico, Nissan quality suffered once they moved to Mex, same with certain Volkswagen models. Holding out hope that the Tacoma is different. And no, factories are not better in Mexico.

Optima went to crap because of the merger to avoid US taxes and likely a change in source materials.

Nissan went to crap because Renault bought them. Renault is in talks to buy Fiat Chrysler (FCA) too, but who knows FCA vehicles might be better after that one.

VW and other VAG cars were never known for reliability. Arguable with their air cooled engines.

Whos to say Toyota's factory in Mexico is better than Texas? Toyota cut a lot of corners with the 3rd gen Tacoma. Just roll under a 4runner then a Tacoma. Why they went with a C-Channel frame vs a fully boxed frame from older gens? Cost cutting. Tacoma is one of the most popular light/med duty trucks. Toyota knew they could sell units at the same price for lower costs, so they did. Again, its Toyota Executives not Mexicans ruining your truck.

Getting this back on track a bit. The Tacoma is not Toyota's meat and potatoes vehicle for reliability. For trucks/SUV's its the Landcruiser. Reliability that is known worldwide.
