Anyway, all the data I’ve seen points to Tacos having good reliability. There are a ton of older models on the road as well.

Chrysler made in America aren't any better except for the possible exception of the Jeep Wrangler. People will claim their quality is poor too, but that is debatable. Fiat and Renault have reputations for poor quality as well. Fiat owns Chrysler and Renault owns Nissan and Mitsubishi by the way and Fiat and Renault are just about to become one company soon as well if the government lets them merge. If that occurs and Nissan and Mitsubishi are part of the deal then that company would be the biggest auto manufacturing company in the world.
My wife had a Volkswagen Jetta made in Mexico a while back, biggest POS I've ever seen, rivals the old AMC cars for poor quality.

Mexico has been manufacturing vehicles long enough now that their workforce could be considered generational talent. Good indicator of quality when processes obtain longevity that allows said process to be refined and perfected.

Let's not forget that at one point Japanese cars were considered "crap". This was quickly turned into the market giving them a try, realizing they were much more refined and better priced then "American steel", and dominated the auto industry for decades. Point is, perhaps in a few short years, made in Mexico may garner the same credibility. Times change, we constantly evolve. And afterall, we are all driving a vehicle from a company that was once commonly called "crap".

I think the finger pointing is in the wrong direction. The Tacoma's problem, more specifically 3rd gen Tacoma, is not so much with the quality rather it's with the various design flaws. Those issues aren't from the assembly line, they originated from the drawing board and engineering team. Really what's the biggest complaint about the Tacoma? The transmission and gearing. The 6th gear is basically unusable unless you are going downhill at 70mph then you might have a functional 6th gear. It wouldn't matter even if the Tacoma was made in Japan, it would still have a transmission hunting and gearing issue. I haven't heard of too many QC problems with 3rd gen Tacoma's however I do hear a BUNCH of transmission and gearing issues, something the assembly line has nothing to do with.

Perception of some Japanese products after the War were of cheapness........TOYOTA was never rightly called crap. They have never had a poorly built vehicle sold here. Now, Kia, and Hyundai certainly embarassed South Korea at first......but are producing quality now. Maybe Mexico will get there, but I won't buy from them regardless because they are betraying our trust in other ways and I don't respect them.
