Wow, that v6 is tiny!!

So new '07 4R owner here, just poking around today checking stuff out. Looking underneath the hood at first, it looks like something big in there. But moving to the left side and looking at the side view- that engine is tiny!! I can't believe the power that little engine puts out. I think it's about the smallest v6 I've ever seen.

Not only that, but most cars I know have all sorts of gadgets and devices under the hood mounted on the fender/wheel well but not my baby. I mean on the passenger side alone, there's practically nothing that is bolted to that side of the fender. The space that is there could have many uses... Anyone do anything with that space? Surprised Toyota didn't make an external storage tank in that space.

It's a 4.0L V6....there are much smaller V6 engines out there. It just looks small because it's in a large engine compartment.

The engine looks small because the same engine compartment also houses the bigger optional 4.7 V8. I bet you the 4.0 V6 looks even smaller in the second gen Tundra--there's a decent amount of space even with the 5.7 V8.

The additonal space on the passenger side fender, several members have added a secondary battery there. I think some have added an air compressor near that vicinity for air-lockers, etc.

Like said, big engine compartment, two less cylinders, makes it seem smaller than it really is. I too have stopped and marveled under the hood of my 4Runner, as it is so clean and simple compared to some other vehicles. It's alot like my Ram in that it's uncluttered and has plenty of work room in there. Other than the obvious difference of my Ram being a 5.9L and the 4Runner being the 4.0L, the underhood layout is very similar. But the topside oil filter has the Ram beat every time lemme tell ya!!! MAN that thing is saweet :bigok:

The smallest I've ever seen is on the Mazda MX-3. My buddy owned one and I couldn't believe it was a 1.8 V6!

Definitely don't take the V6 4Runner engine for granted. If you compare a V6 4Runner with a V6 Jeep Commander or a V6 Ford Explorer, you'll really appreciate the power and performance of the 4Runner engine. It will far outperform both of those vehicles without breaking a sweat. I believe it gets better gas mileage too!

Yeah the Yoda 4.0L is no slump, but could use a little more grunt. The Xterra VQ40DE 4.0L powerplant seem more potent in comparison. The new 5.6L V8 Pathfinder is nutty, not really a REAL off road capable suv but never the less fun as hell to drive. too bad i still think its ugly compared to the 4Runner.
