Wrecked my 4Runner

Didn't have a good night Monday the 17th. I was driving thru town and a car did a u-turn in front of a couple of cars up in front of me. I was watching him thinking what stupid move was next as it looked like he was going to pull out again and the cars in front of me stopped. Well I didn't as I was still watching the dumba** guy.
The Jeeps bumper and hitch went just over my frame so that is untouched, But the rest is pushed almost into the motor. Mostly to the right side. Left fender is untouched.
I started pulling it apart Saturday. I have been on carpart.com and have found everything I need local to me. Approx. $600. in parts so far.

Sorry to hear. Always sucks to hear a T4R getting wrecked.

It sounded like it was the other guy's fault so curious why you don't go through insurance? Then again they'd probably want to write it off so that might be the case.

Good luck with the rebuild, will be good to have another 3rd gen avoid the scrap pile.

It sounded like it was the other guy's fault so curious why you don't go through insurance? Then again they'd probably want to write it off so that might be the case.

It was my fault. The guy that did the u-turn didn't cause it per say. I was watching him cause it looked like he was going to pull a dumba** move again and didn't see the cars in front of me stop. They weren't stopping cause of him.
I don't have full coverage so I'm not covered on my runner.

Even if you did have full coverage, you'd probably still be at fault. You are supposed to be in full control of your vehicle at all times. 99.9% of any rear end collision situations are the fault of the driver that did the hitting, even if there was some dumba$$ that pulled a boner move that caused a distraction.

Agreed. I used to be an adjuster and wouldnt even persue the other guy.

Good luck with the repairs, looks like it took a pretty nasty hit. Are you going to get a profressional to help with the right inner fender and core support?

Since you have to replace everything anyway, why not give your runner a Taco front clip? That looks awesome.

I'm going to look at a 4runner with the relatively same damage up front and what should I look out for? Is it best to bring it to a shop and have an estimate?

That sucks but it shouldnt be too bad of a fix. I had to do all of that to mine this time last year, it only took me a weekend to get her driving again. Wrecked it on a Saturday, the following Saturday I went and got the parts and took it apart and then Sunday I put it back together and was driving it again minus the front bumper. The worst part is getting your cuts matched up at the fire wall, mine were way off but you really have to be looking at mine to tell it was wrecked.

Ya I don't see it being too bad a job. I was thinking of going right to the firewall at the factory welds. Not sure yet. I will get the rest of it apart this Saturday. I am drilling the spot welds where the wells meet the radiator support. It's been along time but if I remember right the wells are spot welded to the firewall also. I can weld no problem and I also have a friend that can weld anything. Thats what he does and is real good at it so I have help if needed with that. Got to get all that sealant off to see. I just don't have the time to stay right on it like I want to. I'll get there and post pics and what I find and do as I go.

This one shows how far everything got pushed past the frame.

This was before the sport hood and lining the fenders and hood up to get the lines right.

Had to replace this body mount, too.

How she sits now, I ripped the front bumper all to hell so thats on the top of the build list once spring comes.

Probably just OEM for now.
I make my own bumpers, bullbars and sliders etc so I'll probably wait till warmer weather and build a bullbar

I'm not sure there are spotwelds there yet. There must be some kind of joint where the wheelwell is attached. I'll post what I find tho for sure.

Ok I got a little time to hit the garage tonight. Got the right fender off and cleaned off some undercoating in the wheelwell. There ARE spotwelds to remove the inner fender. Pics are in the link below.
I also took more pics of the damage to the right wheelwell.

Not to sound negative, but how many miles are on your 96'?

Thats quite a bit of damage and it looks like you need bags and a windshield too. I know you want to save it, but it may make more sense to sell it or part it out and put that money towards another one.

Just another option.

For example:

1997 Toyota 4Runner

Here is a 97' with 122k for $3600. You could keep yours and swap the 4wd stuff and part out whats left. Could probably pick it up for around $3k.

I really wish I had taken my time to look for spotwelds it could have looked so much better.

It has 178k BUT it runs just as good as new, uses no oil, everything works, there is NO rust on the body at all and just surface on the frame. I have found everything I need and it will be around $600.00. And at this time I can now way afford to buy anotherone so I'll fix it.
