WTB 01-02 4runner vapor canister

Hey all,

New here and appreciate all the experience!

I've had a P0446 code for some time now. Also getting a raw gas smell from the drivers rear of the vehicle. I've checked all the hoses, replaced the gas cap and run a couple cans of seafoam through with no fix.

Figured my next step would be to try and swap in a used vapor canister. If you have one or know of a place I can get one please let me know. Thanks!

You may want to have that diagnosed by the dealer before you spend the $$ because AFAIK, that's an expensive part to replace just to see if that's it.

Get on Car-part.com. Enter in the search criteria and do a seach on "fuel tank". Then call a few places listed on that website and ask them how much for the canister. You may have to call a few places, but you can find one.

I replaced mine about 8mos ago. Found one from a salvage yard off that web site. The vehicle was a wrecked '01 4R w/ only 45K miles on it. The canister was still bolted in. They removed it for me and I only paid $50 out the door for it. Swapped my canister out for the replacement and have not looked back since.

Dealer wants $400 for a new canister...what a rip.

How long is "some time now"? I had mine on for roughly 1,500mi and it went away on its own. Sometimes a small piece of charcoal can get loose and in the way of a valve, causing them to stick. Be careful about replacing w/o actually knowing. Dealers will tell you gas cap and then canister. Save the money and go salvage if you can! But only after someone can give you a real diagnosis. Toyota has over 25 steps to checking this, according to repair diagrams.

Oh, it's been several thousand miles..... And no way am I spending $400 for a new canister!

I'd take the dealer diagnostic route if I knew that they could definitely narrow it down to something definite. I've read too many times where folks have had the dealer diagnose and fix then only have to return a few hundred miles later for the same code. Has anyone ever had this code correctly diagnosed without returning to the dealer and having more parts/labor thrown at them?

A $50 used canister is worth it to me (assuming a decent low mileage unit) to avoid paying the near $100 diagnostic fee and God knows whatever part/labor they want to tack on as well.

The only thing that's troubling me is the raw gas smell. I don't notice it all the time though, pretty infrequently actually, but it's there. I've not read about any one else complain about this concurrently with the P0446 code.

Chances are, it's going to be either 1 of the 3 VSV switches that have failed or the canister itself. Two of the switches are under the hood - "VSV for CCV" and "VSV for EVAP". The third swith is located at the canister itself - "VSV for VSP". This VSV for VSP typically goes bad before the other 2 switches do as it is right at the canister. These switches can run from $60-$140 new at the dealer.

Correction , my deal wanted $489+ tax for a new canister! What a joke.
