WTB: 1998-2002 3rd gen 4Runner

Unfortunately I'm still in the hunt guys, these just keep slipping from my fingers.

Today I was going to buy one from a dealer in Ohio (remember I'm in California) as soon as I called for the final price so that I could put a deposit down and pick it up this weekend, the sales person told me someone was at the dealer buying it and he couldn't let me have it

After that I called a dealer in Texas and someone put down a deposit but the person hasn't shown up to pick it up or worked out to pay it off. So hopefully I can work something out tomorrow

These were both 02 sport editions in thundercloud

If anyone has anything they'd like to share just hit me up, budget is still open. Mileage under 170k would be perfect and I'm looking for a 01-02, explains why I can't find a decent one lol

It's tough to deal with the traveling and not being able to check it out in person and/or put a deposit down. Found a 99 manual WITH the e-locker in MO...called the guy and asked for ANYTHING he had in terms history...nothing, didn't even know if the timing belt had been done (215k so twice)...I'm always battling whether to just take a leap on these things or just keep looking because they'll be another one closer or with better history.

That's what happened with me, the 02 sport in Ohio was at a dealer and they had no clue if the belt was done, the carfax stated that it only had 1 owner so I was going to risk it and buy it. 2 weeks before that the same dealer had it for 10k and even at that price I was thinking of pulling the trigger but the timing belt situation was what held me back, it had super low miles at 115k but the dealer said the belt "looked fine" to them so I was skeptical about it. Then the price dropped to 8k and it sold right away. Kinda bummed out about it but it's cool, there's plenty more out there (too bad I can't find one lol)

Yeah...speaking of taking leaps I started this thread about the search aspects:

Good read, lot of great feedback I appreciated. Basically it's all over the place depending on personal preference really...kind of like the prices on these trucks!

1999 Limited. The miles are higher than you would like (247k) but it's a solid truck. If I had the time I'd drive it out to Cali for you lol. $5500

That mileage isn't high for a 4runner. I'm at 270,000 and still running like a champ!!! They run forever. That's an amazing offer on your rig

I'm still in the hunt guys

Recently I was working on picking one up last week in SoCal. The seller was from here, I didn't try to low ball and told him I would pay his asking price. I asked for some pics of the under carriage and never heard back until the next day when he told me he sold it locally, kinda sketchy but whatever. What really got me mad was the fact that I met his price got transportation from the Bay Area to SoCal scheduled and got the money ready to go and he flaked out on me.

But it's ok, I'm still on the hunt so if anyone has one or knows of one please let me know. I'm ok with going out of state as long as the truck is worth it. The budget all depends on what the rig has to offer but it's pretty open

I'm looking for a 3rd gen limited if possible and automatic. Preferably 99-02 and a clean carfax

People selling used cars are notoriously lazy. All they care about is a pile of dollar bills, so if you can't make the trip they will sell to whoever shows up. I've lost out on some good deals that way but also got a killer deal on a motorcycle by being at the dealer first. A guy in TX had put a non refundable $300 deposit on a shipper to delivery it and lost it. To the swift belong the race...

Hmm kinda sketchy on the dealer's part though...I've lost out on a couple with dealers saying someone is "working on that one and put a deposit down"

Although, I have yet to have it happen like you said and physically show up with cash in hand ready to buy. I could see dealers not being so moral with that scenario.

Wasn't the dealer. The buyer insisted the dealer hold the bike with a credit card number and prepare to ship it from Alabama. Dealer said no way he will pack and ship. Come to the store and the first one there gets it. I did. And got a super deal too!

The guy in Texas actually called that night to tell me this story. Just tells me you have to take all the initiative to score a good buy. Sellers aren't going to go out of their way - dealer or private.

Agreed. When I (regrettably) sold the '98 I had a kid and his Dad tell me they were on the way up through VA to come pick it up even though I had told them explicitly I had a buyer already lined up driving over that same morning from Maryland...they said "it's alright, just let us know if it sells and we'll turn around otherwise we're driving up in case the guy doesn't show."

What it told me was...I should have kept that truck! lol

3rd gen for sale

I have one for sale. Trying to put together a for sale thread but I guess I don't have enough posts. Email me and I can provide further info.

Thanks,

The search is over

So finally I was able to find myself my 4Runner. I normally wanted a 02 sport edition in thunder cloud grey but this deal was too good to be true.

It's a 98 clean car fax, low miles at 156k drive belts just got done last year, timing belt at 100k miles, interior is clean. The seats have stains but I'm working on switching them to leather. She's a California car and she's been in my home town her whole life. I couldn't pass up on the deal, it was too cheap and the best thing.... No payments from a dealer and no shipping from Texas, I was about to fly to Texas to buy a 02 sport with 146k miles for 7500, and no history on any maintenance.

Here she is
