I am looking to buy a well maintained 3rd or 4th gen 4Runner (MY1996-2009) with automatic transmission. I am open to other generations, but figured 3rd/4th will most appropriately fall within my budget, which is around $6,000. I would like to stay under $10k. I am located in Maryland, but willing to travel out of state (NY, PA, VA, DE) if I find something I really like.
Odometer mileage is not as big of an issue to me as the actual condition and maintenance of the vehicle. However, I would like something that hasn't exceeded 200k miles. My goal is to acquire a 4runner that is going to be reliable and has the completed routine maintenance as well as higher mileage repairs such as timing belt, water pump, etc. I have no interest in any trail upgrades or modifications.
I'm trying to stay away from anything that increases the chances of the car requiring major repairs months or years down the line of ownership. So no salvage titles or anything requiring a lot of repairs. Just want a headache free 4runner that won't require any major maintenance outside of the routine oil & fluid changes. I am pretty new to the 4runner platform, so I intend to get a pre-purchase inspection on the vehicle.
