Gah! I should confirm my info before posting again. Looks like I misread the post below and thought it was November 2006 the V6 gaskets were changed. It was November 2005 the new head gaskets were completely phased in.

I would RUN not WALK from rust belt trucks. Take your time and get the one you want. I'm in Colorado and our trucks are mostly rust free but they're very expensive. I ended up with a truck from Florida that had been in Virginia. It is OK, but there is 3/10 rust and I broke a few (not critical) bolts putting a lift on. My truck was about 4-5K less than Colorado prices so I think it was worth it. However, if I had waited I've seen some trucks in better condition for about the same money since I bought. I would take your time if you can. Cheers.

Your advice is greatly appreciated.

I test drove a 4Runner here in Salt Lake that had spent a few years in the Northeast. I noted how clean the underbody was and the frame... Until I reached under, scratched the frame with my fingernail, and small flakes of the painted over rust fell onto the ground. I could now see under the paint (shady dealer) and was scared to think of the condition of the rest of the frame, given that the seller saw this as a liability and attempted to hide it.

I have a lead down South that may hopefully pan out.

I'm going overseas military orders in a couple months and I PMd you with no reply so I'll just post this here in case anyone else is interested, but I'm looking to sell to an enthusiest only, and if not it will sit for 2 years until I come back. 2003 Black V8 4WD with 220k mi, original Xtreas, sport package, sunroof, Doug Thorley Headers (2 magnaflow cats behind the headers and magnaflow muffler - the pretty quiet one very low drone), 32" behind grill light bar, Vled around outside, Led and halogen inside. Timing belt done at 198k. Mobil 1. Husky floormats, cargo shelf, steering wheel leather is great. Havnt done the dash crack recall because I don't want them touching the ECU (very faint crack) this is the model that can handle the supercharger if you ever find one. Original radio, JBL 10speaker, CD player doesn't work use IPod over radio connection. Cup holder insert gone. Installed a new to me transfer case due to actuator becoming unsynced while replaced transfer case housing for a crack. Absolutly love this truck and there is not a single leak and this is a tough decision but I don't want sand in the engine so I'm leaving it stateside. Just drove it to FL from MD and only issue was keeping it below 80. It drives anywhere anytume.sad times.

While you do indeed have a great truck and I can see you've taken care of it, I'm really trying to get into the Shadow Mica color. I've just fallen for that paint, much to my wife's chagrin and patience.

Also, the owner won't ship it, which doesn't work for anyone 2000 miles away, like me. Wrong color and it won't satisfy my hood scoop envy (it's a real disease!)

Yeah, I got my 4runner about a month ago and had my heart sat on getting a Limited for the leather and heated seats. Living in Memphis means these things might as well be made of gold as every family buys them up to give to their kids to go off to college so it's rare to see one for sale and also being 4wd makes it super rare and when you do it's listed for 4-6k over KBB and is sold same day as its listed online. Not that KBB is correct but just giving you an idea of the price point in my market of typically rust free examples. I reluctantly went and looked at a black V8 Sport AWD and fell for it. Needed to put a bit more into it than I planned. Did the full 5th gen brake upgrade as it had a terrible wobble at highway speed from warped rotors and the majority of the brake caliper pistons were frozen, need to do the CV Axles as the boot is torn, and planning on doing the timing belt job this winter as it has 130k miles and no service record showing that it has been done. Just waiting on my settlement check from VW for the emissions scandal on my Jetta to get it done. Ended up paying about 30% more than I had planned (based on kbb price) for this one as I was running out of time on my rental and it appeared to be in great condition overall, the only ones that were at a "bargain" price were in the rust belt and were quite a gamble as they would require shipping and most of the sketchballs selling online wouldn't allow pre-inspection as the vehicles were held "off-site" without anyone to let an inspector in. Mine came from Little Rock Arkansas. No rust anywhere. So far the zero rust has made doing maintenance a breeze. Good luck on your search. I am from Kansas and this is by far the cleanest vehicle I have ever worked on.

2007-2009 V6 because I don't want to deal with headgasket issues down the road. V6 because of gas mileage and don't have anything to tow.


Honest question to those in the Rust Belt... How are your undercarriages?


For example, this car...it's been in Indiana and Michigan for most of its life. Aren't frames completely destroyed from the Salt sprays they use out there? EDIT: price is $17k.

I think the condition of a vehicle, including it's undercarriage, from the "Rust Belt" really depends on the vehicle owner and how they take care of the vehicle. Was the vehicle undercoated? Was it garage kept? Washed frequently throughout the winter to keep the snow off, etc.?
I owned a Honda Prelude that I had undercoated and the undercarriage looked great after 11 years and 210,000+ miles. So, don't rule out a vehicle from the north.
If you're not in a rush and your heart is set on the 2007-2009 4R Shadow Mica, then be patient and keep looking.

The 2006 V8 Shadow Mica I picked up a few months ago in Chicago has some surface rust, but nothing terrible. I plan to take a wire brush to the rust, hit it with a rush inhibitor, then undercoat it. The 4Runner was a deal, but it needed a little work. The lower steering shaft U-joint needed to be replaced cause it was rusted and made turning feel like there wasn't power steering. Now it drives great.
I saw several 2006-2009 4Runners get snatched up pretty quick, and the Shadow Mica ones seemed to go faster than any other color.
