Thanks, I've been looking on those. I'm also seeing on here for more built up vehicles, possibly bumper/lift/skids etc.

Here are some tips.
If you just click the Trim filter on those car sites, and select "Trail" you won't find all the Trail and Trail Premiums. This is especially true on Autotrader. What you need to do is instead don't filter, and select "Keyword" then type "Trail" and it will give you results. Now whether you select Trim: Trail or you do the keyword you get some vehicles that are NOT trails. Its easy to see, they have no hood scope, or they have shiny chrome on the bumpers, or they have 19" rims, etc. But you will find so many trails this way.
Also I find many trails that are marked as other models. So sometimes once again I will view all 4runners and then filter on "sunroof" or "leather" (if I am looking for Trail Premium) and then just look for the telltale rims or scoop.
This will allow you to find the Trails no one else is seeing! Setup search notifications so each time one is added it emails you. I used:
autotrader.com
cargurus.com
cars.com
Other good sites are Craigslist and Ebay Motors.

During business days we typically have a max 2 hr response time on e-mails and 24 hours the two days we're closed.
We got a deposit on the vehicle the day we put the original post up.

Still looking for a 5th gen trail, preferably with the sunroof + leather, magnetic gray and free of rust (hopefully west coast). On the major car search sites I maybe get 3 or 4 nationwide.
Hi - new here. Looking to buy a 5th gen trail premium this year and am taking a similar approach. I have a few questions for you:
1. Did you negotiate the final price before flying out there?
2. Did you deal by phone or email mostly?
3. Did you have the car inspected by anyone before you came to a final agreement?
4. Did you have to make a deposit?
5. How did the dealer handle tax?
If anyone has any experience with this, please chime in.

2. Used email initially and phone once I knew I wanted to vehicle, it really doesn't matter, sometimes in the beginning when your filtering through many vehicles email is easier.
3. Did not have an inspection, but asked a lot of questions, such as about the tires, service, etc.

5. Taxes are handled by me when I get the vehicle home.
Regarding taxes, I did run into some dealers who had a very difficult approach where they said if I wanted the vehicle, it would take 14 days, where they collect the tax, mail to my state, get plates, etc, etc And I would not work with a dealer like that, makes no sense.

I'm trying to figure out the issue of the inspection. I would greatly prefer to have one done by an independent mechanic before going out there, or at least before paying them, and driving back home across the country. In larger cities, its about $100-$150 for some piece of mind. I'm not sure how receptive dealers would be to that though.
Edit to add: I understand that I'm buying a used vehicle and am not trying to nit pick, but I'm not experienced enough to make an educated evaluation on my own.

I got mine at a dealer, Texas Direct Auto. They are huge. Although after the floods in Houston I am not sure how that effected their inventory.
