Anyone get a buzzing sound in their engine right above the fuze box. I sware is sounds like a big ass carpenter bee. It goes off every so often after I cut the motor.

Thoughts?

It's definitely the charcoal canister.

Next time it is making the buzz, pop open your gas cap and the noise will stop.

Toyota had a TSB on this for the Tacomas of that vintage, so I assume they had it for the 4Runner too. It cost like $25 for the part to fix this - IIRC, but that was about 7 years ago so I could be wrong on the cost. It was a very easy fix, too - just add a little "muffler" to the charcoal canister.

Does it affect anything like emmsions or gas milegae? By adding the muffler I mean. Also does the canister ever have to be serviced?

My '97 did it alot but it's nothing to worry about. My '99 does it when it's really hot out but it's still kinda rare.

No. The noise is just you canister purging air. When the air comes out, it makes a fart noise. The muffler thingie just quiets the noise.

Here is the TSB number: EG002-97

By "it", I assume you mean the charcoal canister. Charcoal canisters don't get serviced, AFAIK, but they do need to be replaced on rare occasion ($$$). Most likely sign of a bad charcoal canister would probably be the engine computer throwing an emissions-related code.
