You do know that the one on the pic is for a 3rd Gen wind deflector, you need one with a notch on the middle part to account for the roof mounted 3rd brake lights. plus the mounting might be different.

It's supposed to deflect the air downwards to keep your exhaust from coming in the back window when it's rolled down. It is also supposed to blow dust and debris off your rear window. It didn't do either for me.

It seemed to catch snow and allow it to build up behind it.

If you don't want your exhaust to come in the back, simply roll down your drivers or passengers side windows a little.

They work on the concept of disrupting the vortex at the back of the vehicle to keep crap from building up on the window (and as stated above) exhaust gas from rolling into the vehicle.

They do work as far as reducing the crap that builds up on the rear window (not alleviating - reducing).

I've had 4Runners and other SUV's with and without the deflector and they do help.

I have seen them on 2nd Gen's but more so on Surf's than on the Runner. Obviously would still fit a Runner though.

I took mine off. The 4R looks a lot cleaner w/o it IMO. I have not noticed a difference in dust or debris building up on my back window since taking it off and I live on a dirt road 1 mile from pavement.

There were 3 small holes left on each side after I removed it. I put flat head screws in them and hit them with a little touch-up paint. I like the look a lot better w/o it, but it's a matter of personal preference.
