XM Install

My XMDirect will be here in a few days... just trying to plan a bit.

Do you need to tap into power to install? Or, is power received from the HU?

this unit runs off the HU. (Actually power comes from the HU through the adapter.)
The tuner box can get a little warm after using it for a while (i.e hours). I put mine in the cubby above the glove box and flipped the little flap up so you can't see it, but gives it some breathing room.
 
Just for posterity...

I installed mine today in my '07 w/Nav.

I wanted the space in my glove box, so I mounted the XM unit inside the center console cover - between the shifter and the arm rest portion. Had to remove a switch guard, but I see no problem with what I did.

I mounted the Terk unit same location as waterman.

The antenna is on the dash (double sided tape), right side, basically lined up with the end of the right wiper arm (where it connects to the blade).

Everything works perfectly. Went for a long drive, out of town into the country, and never lost signal.

My only complaints are the length of text displayed (seems limited to ten) and you have to push the audio button to see who's playing. I think those issues may be HU issues - not necessarily the XMDirect???

I really appreciate this thread and especially Waterman for the pics and explanation.

Absolutely worth the time and $ - a no brainer.

I just realized I probable should have taken pictures. If I ever go back in (likely), I'll snap a few.

XM install

Will this work on the older Scion HU? I currently have a SkyFi2 unit hooked up through a PIE adaptor. Can't get rid of the dreaded alternator whine though.

I installed the Terk on my scion HU with no problems.

I installed my Terk unit in the center console then made a subfloor to cover it up. With the little factory carpet thing over it, you can't even tell it is there.
 
This is a great thread !

Does anyone know of a female Ipod type connector that ends with RCA connectors ?

I have a Scion T1807 HU and a grom audio cable that connects directly to the IPOD at the bottom. I would like to use this connection to disconnect the IPOD and connect a sattelite receiver.

Any ideas ?

I've had a few days with the XM now. I lost reception for the first time tonight for about half a second while making a u-turn under an overpass. But, the weather is very bad today, so I wonder if that didn't contribute.

So far, I've very happy with the antenna placement.

hmm...it looks like they did increase the XMDTLK price to $159. And searching other vendors shows the price between $160 to $300.

Damn...even eBay shows them going for $150.

that sucks.

Guess folks caught on to a good deal.

It looks like the kit to convert a GM/BMW Sirius ready radio to accept XM is $99.
 
I know...5 months so far of idiot free music in the morning and uninterrupted road trip tunes.

I really don't know how I lived without it.

At least I didn't have to spend $450 from the dealer to get it.

My wife doesn't bug me about the forum anymore...the money I have saved and good tips I have gotten from other folks here have been worth it...
especially when she is laughing her ass off listening to the XM comedy stations.:beer:
 
xm radio

i thought the only way to get xm thru the scion head unit was the 400 dollar toyota xm tuner? is this some new discovery? what is the difference? shoot for 150 , ill take it
 
Yep, it's essentially the same gear. Everything you need is in the kit (see the first page of this post).

and yea...sometimes the dealer just wants to be stupid. :bash:
 
I have an 06' w/ factory Nav. Can I use this and still use an Ipod interface. I'm looking for the best way to integrate an Ipod and an XM tuner using the Nav display.

Yep, I have it installed in my 06 w/ factory nav and am still able to use the ipod interface. Hope that helps!
 
I should have explained better. I'm looking to control the Ipod and the XM tuner on the Nav display. The aux jack in the center console works fine, I'm just tired of having to look down at the Ipod to make selections.
