XM or SIRIUS

I'm considering getting satellite radio. I talked to many people and some of the saying that Sirius has better music and XM repeating the same music many times a day. Another saying that XM has more subscribers and because of this more money and better quality. Which one is better? What do you think guys?

I will most likely be getting Sirius for X-mas just because of Howard Stern. I can't wait to hear him again as I was one of the lucky ones in which he was pulled from in February of this year. To each their own. Sirius I have a feeling will catch up. I did review both lists of music/talk radio that each has and I do like the Sirius lineup a little better. Just because one company has more subscribers doesn't mean that it is better. I would think just the opposite, the competition that is struggling for customers will make their product the best it can be to beat out the competition. Just my $.02
 
I like Sirius stations much more, but the XM docks look cooler (to me). That said, I have friends with both and the guys with XM wish they had Sirius.
 
Sirius for me is great. Just can't decide which channel I like best. For the initial cost of <$100 I think its a bargain especially when travelling.

Yeah, but you don't have comedy channels and road conditions readily available on IPod or CD's. There's more to Satelllite than just music. Each to their own.
 
My unit price was a special offered by Radio Shack for $75. I pay $12/mnth for the service. Nickel and dime compared to most vehicle mods.

By the way, the kids love Disney Channel when we're out and about. Just came back for an offroad trip around Santa Barbara and they were getting pretty bored in the back. Flicked on the Disney Channel and their on the cell phone trying to win a contest.

Like I said sateliite is more than just music.

I cut a hole to insert the reciever. Keeps the wiring hidden too.

If I were to sell the truck I could just buy a new lid from Toyota.

The reciever is screwed into the lid from behind. I was looking at securing the lid permanently so a thief could not remove it and the reciever but I decided I'd rather they just took the unit than tear apart my console to get it out.

Only problem is its a bit too low to see the facia on the unit while driving. I do not find it such a problem now as I know which channels are my favorites so they are programmed into the remote and otherwise I either just flick around till I hear something I like or ask the passenger (wife usually) to check the display.

I've had both. I started with XM, then switched last year to Sirius just for the NFL, then went back to XM when the season ended. Both have good and bad, and here's my opinion on them:

XM - the good: I really like some of their stations - the 70s, the Loft, XM Cafe, the comedy channels. They play full-length versions of the songs. Some funny bits and sound bites (from movies, the Simpsons, Seinfeld, etc.) are played between songs. Cinemagic station is cool. They have 3 comedy channels, one of which gets Phil Hendrie. And the selection of units is better.

XM - the bad: they tend to play the same stuff over and over, especially on the comedy channels. No NFL.

Sirius - the good: More diverse play list. NFL. Seems to have a bit more "variety." Howard Stern coming soon.

Sirius - the bad: They play the chopped, FM versions of songs - a big annoyance. A lot of their stations run together, meaning that you will hear the same songs on five different channels. Less of a selection of units.

And...this is purely subjective and my own opinion, but it seems to me that XM is geared more towards the 30s and 40s crowd and Sirius is more for the 20s. Being almost 40, I prefer XM.

Don't know if this would help but if you know someone with Direct TV they get Sirius free on their TV. Go check out the channels and what they play. You can also listen online but I think you have to sign-up first.
 
In the past, I had always assumed I'd be going with XM when the time came. I just checked out what I'd be using most on both sites (Jazz & Jazz related) and Sirius looks significantly better on paper.

Looks like I'll have some homework to do. Market economies are great, aren't they?
 
Well, I have Sirius, and the fiancee has XM... what are we going to do after the wedding?! Haha..

'Sirius'ly though, they are both good. What you should really do is go down to Circuit City, etc. and listen to them both. Look at what songs are playing. I'm not hung up on the 'deeeeep' playlist issue. I found that, for the genres I like, XM sometimes was playing things that I never heard of, or cared to hear. But, Sirius does have more repeats. Thats just my opinion. The NFL package on Sirius is great. If you like MLB, ya gotta go with XM.
The talk and comedy on both is about equal.

Think of it this way. You can get into the equipment for under $100. If you don't like it after 6 months, try the other one.

Also, I think it is Dish Network, not DirecTV that gives free Sirius on the 6000 or 8000 channels.
