XM Radio Install on 2006 4Runner

Need Advice. I just purchased a new 2006 4Runner LImited. The dealer is going to install the XM Radio so it works with the existing HEad Unit. I did NOT purchase Navigation or Read Entertainment, it has the JBL 6 CD changer that will work with XM.

The dealer provides a part PT54607050 that is called XM Tuner kit and is a receiver and antennae.

Anyone have experience with this install? Where does antennae go? Is it possible to also have somewhere to attach an MP3 player (not ipod) with this install?

I asked the dealer and the salesman, parts department and service was clueless. Said to call back on monday and talk to someone else in service. To make matters further murky, the salesman says an outside firm does the install.

Need advice on where to put antennae and how to also intergrate an MP3 player that the install looks clean and doesn't use wireless fm modulator.

I ran into this as well and contacted my dealer regarding the situation. I was informed that the receiver and antenna components needed to make the XM operate through the HU would not be available until March 2006. I was also told the cost of the receiver and antenna would be $300.

If you find this to be not true, please post a reply to this thread.

I have an order in place for the receiver and antenna parts when they become available and they said they will place the antenna at the rear of the vehicle around the rear spoiler.

As for the MP3 player, my 2006 has a port in the center console that allows you to plug an MP3 (I have an iPod) directly into play your MP3 music through the factory HU by accessing the CD/AUX button on the HU. The only thing that I don't like about this is the cord running out of the center console that is attached to the MP3 player. I would assume your 2006 4Runner has the same component.

Part PT54607050

I talked with the parts department at a dealer in Northern Virginia and they said that you have to use the Factory provided XM Tuner Kit provided by Toyota. It is part PT54607050. Quoted price of $419. You cannot use a generic XM tuner.

The Parts guy said the XM Tuner kit connects directly to the head unit. Does NOT go thru an FM Modulator, which is great. Directly connected to head unit.

I am schedule for this wednesday but then again the sales guy says it is done by someone outside the dealership which makes no sense. I am trying to make sure it is done by the dealer. Keep you posted.

And yes, the AUX port works great. The salesman said I needed extra work, he did not know all the features of the car.

I detailed my experience with my 2006 Sport in an identical posting on 12/31 but will repeat here. I have installed a Delphi SKYFi2. First of all, the I Pod Aux jack in the console box did not work "great". The volume was too low and it had audible engine noise. This could have been because the cable was from Radio Shack but it was definitely unacceptable. Fortunately, the built in FM transmitter in the SKYFi2 works great for the FM modulation route. I bought a car kit and the SKYFi2 from Crutchfield. I'm getting ready to install the "vehicle specific" bracket from Bracketron which I purchased from www.xm-radio-satellite.com. After that I just need to get a local installer to hardwire the power supply so that I can eliminate cigarette lighter adapter and have them run the antenna wire from the spoiler area under the interior trim to the radio. For those desiring the built in route, it will require an RDS Toyota radio which I think the non JBL radio is not. Also check out the new Terk Smart Digital Adapter. Looks much cheaper than Toyota prices quoted above for built in.
