My front two struts leak on my xreas suspension! Warranty wont cover it and toyota wants $850 to fix. I have a cornfed 3/2 lift and plan on throwing on bf a/t 275's. i am looking for some new shocks that provide a good ride. I don't plan on doing any heavy 4 wheelin. Any suggestions? i am leaning toward bilsteins.

I would just pull the Xreas . After doing this myself a week ago and replacing with FJ springs and shocks , honestly I thing it handles better and I also think the nose divine and body roll are better than before .
NOTE: I pulled my 65k miles Xreas for brand new FJ suspension with no miles on it , so naturally it would ride and handle better just because it's new . No regrets on pulling Xreas at all and one rear shock was starting to have seepage . (but I did not see that until after it was all pulled off and inspected)
I pain less than 100.00 shipped to my door for a full FJ suspension , front and rear , shocks , springs and struts that were take off's

:iagree:That's the 'cost effective' solution. I am on FJC springs too and love them. The Toytec is awesome but more of a financial hit. Toytec has a sticky, click there for links and prices. If you can swing the Toytec that'd be awesome but you do have a choice.

Well not to rain on the lift parade but I enjoy the XREAS. the Glenn Hwy here is just a lovely piece of road and the ruts formed by the tire studs make changing lanes a roll in and out of the rut trails. probably 2 inches rut to non rut and the XREAS makes short work of them.
If I had lifted with taught springs might be in trouble. that said, a major reason i got the xtended warranty was for the XREAS to replace it late in the game. I am also a big fan of it on ice and packed snow. keeps me level the nose trimmed up and does wonderful donuts. Ok. I'm done.:runaway:

I like the ride now , better than when I had my Xreas. I could swear there is less roll , but I also have a little wider stance with my FJ wheels . Now If I do some high speed cornering then maybe it will be different , but the way I looked at it is that I should not be high speed cornering anyway with a truck like this .
I can't compare the difference to a non Xreas system since I never had that.

i kept the xreas but added the FJC springs. like all the posts above have stated the ride is much better and combined with the xreas im very happy. i kept the FJC shocks to use if/when the xreas goes out ill just swap in the FJC ones since i only paid $80 for the whole setup.
agree w. the comment about lower speeds but i prefer the stiffness compared to the stock setup. the car used to roll easy when i pulled into my driveway now it just feels like a tank and more solid.

I think the xreas is a great system (although mine has since been pulled). Even with my coilovers (which are firmer than FJ suspension) I get more body roll than i did with the xreas. I would just try to get a hold of some xreas shocks that were taken off someones rig who added coilovers (mine are gone) and swap them in. Assuming your system didnt loose too much pressure you should be good after switching in new shocks.

Bought it from a guy on the FJC forums .
The swap does not do much at all . I probably got a 1/2" at all 4 corners , but also put in a 1" Cf spacer . It sits about a 1/2" higher in back so I'll call it level . The FJ rims give it a little wider stance . Im very happy with it , BUT another inch all the way around would be perfect .
Don't get me wrong Xreas is an excellent system , I just had the opportunity to swap to all new stuff so I took it .

Seepage at 65k?! I'm still looking for my first 4R, and putting a premium on XREAS for my extensive highway use. I'll probably get an '03 with around 100k on it, perhaps I'm asking for trouble? Half a million miles on my Land Cruisers has been fairly trouble free, I'm hoping for the same with a 4R.

im not sure everybody nesessarily prefers the fj swap over the bilsteins, but its a hell of alot cheaper... but in a way , i guess maybe you can say prefered for that reason. i myself, have used a few different brands , on vec.s over the years, & never had any complaints with bilsteins, tho it does help to get springs that compliment them.keeping on the good side, thats exactly what you ll get if you go full the fj swap (springs included) theyre sort of made for each other. either way, both are good, im not saying one setup is better than the other, just different strokes,for ____ ...

keep in mind there are 3 types of FJC suspension setups, all the springs are the same the difference is on the shocks.
base: all black Tokico
Off-Road package: silver Bilstein,
TRD: red Bilstein
the reason your Xreas (shocks) fail is "probably" because of the coil springs. just remember, shocks don't lift up your truck, coil springs are the ones which carry the weight and support the frame. shocks being called shocks is because they are there to damp the impact.
Why 4Runner is heavier than FJC but the springs are lighter? 4Runners are designed to feed the needs mainly to the soccer mom's, they want cushy ride and quiet when go through speed bumps. after i swapped out our 4th gen's shocks and coils, i feel it rides better but my wife thinks it's noisier.
this is a side by side pic of 08 FJC OR package front coil over vs. stock 04 SR5, they are the exact same length, but only the FJC coil is made of bigger wire:
take a look at any, i mean any stock 2nd and 3rd gen 4Runner's on the road, they are all sag in the butt. why? because when people buy the new truck, it rode nice and quiet, but over the years when the under weighted springs got tired, they start to getting shorter and shorter.
the best place to find these is on fjc forum. i got my who set for about 120 bucks.
another benefit of switching to FJC is lots of the 4th gen's are still under either standard or extended warranty, all the silver and red Bilstein shocks are labeled as "Toyota", most of the yahoo's at dealers won't know the differece, but if you have after market suspension and take yours in for warranty work, i can guarantee you they will give you some BS about it.
