XREAS life expectancy

Sorry, i did a search and was not able to find info on this. Too many xreas topics to go through.

I know there are some people who cant wait until the XREAS fails so they can replace it with something else. For me, it's the opposite, so I would like to know how long does XREAS last on average. I dont really do off-roading.

I have a 2006 with 144,000 KM (90,000 miles). I drive mostly highway, so mileage is not as bad.

I'd say you're at about the average. I've seen folks who had to replace it with less than 50k miles and others who have 150k miles + and still going strong. When it does go out, just unbolt it and swap in new shocks.

Yes, but you have to take out the front and rear at the same time.

I had 70k on mine when I put the lift on. 6 years of Michigan winters, and the system looked fine.

I have some questions for people that have replaced or removed the xreas shocks. Upon removing the shocks, are there any concerns about leaking hydraulic fluid from the system? Are there any check valves to keep it from leaking all over the place?


How about if I decide to keep the system and replacing with new xreas system? ( I know I heard it's spendy and I understand that I have to replace all 4). Do I have to replace the two cylinders that holds the fluid with a new one? Is this just a straight forward install? Or there any special instructions or special tools to install?


Ok, if I decide to go the other route like going with Bilstein shocks or comparable. Will I loose the performance benefits? Or is it an improvement over the factory xreas? I mean SUVs are known to lean in corners due to it's higher center of gravity the xreas does a great job to keep it from leaning. Maybe I just need to ride another 4runner with a shock upgrade to tell a difference. Anyone here live locally?

When you say they were bad? How do you mean from a on-road or off-road standpoint, or both? In other words, were the new shocks ( non xreas) better on road and off road. If yes, in what sense? Did it corner better? Ride more comfortable etc?

The X reas will fail you. Get 5100's and FJ Springs and call it a day. Way better ride than X reas by far. Don't bother replacing X reas with new because it's NOT worth it. The FJ Springs are stiffer than stock and help Nose dive on braking and cornering. Huge improvement over X reas crap as far as ride goes. Rip X reas lines out and enjoy the ride.

Didnt do alot of off roading with them so cant speak much there but on road it was a huge difference. I could feel every bump with xreas but cornering was still good for a suv. I came from a 99 4r with stock suspension so it felt alot better than that. But when i replaced it i feel no bumps small bumps now and big ones feel like there small. And cornering has also gotten better and i am even running with no sway bar up front with the new suspension.

I thought my XREAS was shot, then I changed tires to LTX M/S 2 265/70/17 and it was a night and day difference. It seems like the XREAS works a lot better now?

I have a set of bilsteins in the garage, and I was contemplating your same thoughts.


Was planning on doing both but with the smooth tires, I will wait another 5,000 miles then consider a swap.

As a lot of people have mentioned. Its hard to commit to ripping out the entire system. There is no going back...

yes, but do it with all 4 wheels off the ground to avoid fluid shooting out when you undo the connections. i just ty wraped the hoses out of the way.

I Had a 2003 and had over 180,000 miles on it and never had any issues before I was STUPID enough to get rid of it to get a Forester (Big Mistake) But should have a new one by mid March. I can't wait.

As long as it's not sagging or leaking, sometimes one can only assume it's still working properly. If the mounts go, it could start making knocking noises, but not necessarily.

Check it like any other shock by doing the bounce test.

56,000 on my 04 Sport and Right Front is leaking. I'm planing to replace just that one with new OEM from partznet.
