Simple post regarding XREAS, I own a 5th gen with XREAS and my sister just purchased a used Sport Edition 06' which I guess has XREAS as well.

How long did your XREAS last before you HAD to change it, not because you wanted a lift, but simply because your mechanic/stealership said they need to be replaced.

Mine had to be replaced on the back around 30k and the fronts around 45k.

I just bought my 2005 Sport Edition this Sunday and the XREAS is flawless
It was inspected very recent and they had no concerns

Not much help as I'm just learning about the suspension but I do know mine are original and work great

For those of you guys voting, perhaps if you can chime in also to state whether or not you guys ran top out spacers and/or how rough the roads are in your area. These things can add much undue stress to the shocks and blown them out prematurely. Granted I didn't have XREAS, but I popped my factory front passenger shock in under 10k miles hitting potholes like nobody's business, :(

That's a valid point eddiebx

Only vote if you didn't drive your 4R like it was an destructible tank! :)

Congrats on your purchase!! how many miles?

167,000 km, 2006

167,000 km, 2006 4runner. Mostly highway miles and light trails.

i bought the car f 4 years ago so it's hard to say if the suspension has gotten softer through the years. Im sure it has but it is so gradual i dont notice the change. In any case, it is still functioning fine.

I bought mine with 108k, it felt pretty soft- body roll around the turns and nose dive when braking. Swapped out for the Bilstein 5100s and it was a huge improvement. Corners nice and tight now, and almost no nose dive when stopping. Much more stable but not an uncomfortably firm ride.

I was at ~110K when my dealer said they where leaking and needed to be replaced. At 120K when the tires finally wore out I went 5100/FJ.

XREAS longevity

102k on an '06 Sport 4WD. No problems, firm ride, tight cornering, no leaks, no suspension mods to the vehicle

Just bought it about 6 weeks ago so don't really know how the vehicle was driven. I'll use it for towing, highway and light off road. Have a set up Wrangler for the rough stuff.

Everyone seems to like the 5100 Bilsteins as a replacement so will probably do that route when the XREAS goes bellyup.

I swapped my XREAS out at just over 100k. It was leaking a bit at that point but did not HAVE to be replaced--I wanted a lift then.

Most shocks start to degrade by 100k, so even if the system is not leaking, you might appreciate an upgrade.

2004 Sport with 178K. I lost my center shock on the driver side about 160K. Went to get leave one morning and there was an small oil puddle on driver side right in front of the rear wheel. Had to replace both shocks, tubing and center shock since the system was almost dry. Talk about bouncing when hitting a bump. The front right was all over the place. Expensive - done at dealer. The ride still doesn't feel the same as it used to though.

Replaced stock xreas with Bilstein 5100's and FJ Springs around 160k. Installed all new for right at $1k. Nite to day improvement. Nice Lil lift.
