I had no idea they were being discontinued either. When it's finally time to replace my 3rd gen I might actually consider one of these as it's the last of the last of the BOF trucks you can still get a manual with.

That said, you guys that are saying they're priced on par with the 4runner must have better deals where you are. A pro4x 6sp man xterra runs about 38K CAD. A 4runner trail edition, only available in auto goes for nearly 46. I haven't compared incentives, but that's a pretty big price gap

I would say it did briefly, to a small extent. Since Nissan turned the Pathfinder into a mini-van, previous Pathfinder fans had pretty much two choices: X-Terra or 4Runner. We all know who won that brief battle.

No experience with XTerra's but it worries me that everyone has abandoned vehicles that are a good base for building up off-road. Even if sales are reasonable how long is it until Toyota see's the market shift and goes solely to cross-over style vehicles?

Maybe I should go buy like five 4-Runners and just store them in a shed so when one wears out I can transfer aftermarket parts and move on to the next one

Bought my 2000 XTerra SE V6 in June of 1999 (initial release). Loved it. Modded the heck out of it but then crashed it in 03. It was built like a tank which is more than likely why I'm still here.

My feeling is that the 4Runner body on frame design is going to die, and soon. Toyota has already stated the GX460 will not be made anymore and the way companies are going the only way for a body on frame to be had is a pick-up truck.

So scoop them up.

Another thing I hear a lot is that most Nissan's vehicles get bad gas mileage and maintenance costs are higher then other Japanese MFR's.

I've had an '02 Pathfinder since '04. I have nothing but good things to say about it. Since I got my 5th gen 4Runner last month, I'd say the Pathfinder feels like a little brother to it: similar level of refinement in the interior, less powerful V6, stable on snow and dirt, fine for basic towing. Maintenance hasn't been anything special. Much better than the Camry lemon I had before that, actually. The 4R does get better mileage by a few MPG, but then it's 13 years newer, too.

I just got rid of a 15 Xterra to get my 14 4R. I'd always wanted a 4R but felt I couldn't afford one. The X was basically the 4R I could afford. Ultimately I decided I'd just bite the bullet and spend the money on what I really wanted, and got a 4R.

Frankly, the X made more power and was quicker than the 4R, both with a 4.0. The 4wd even with open diffs was great. It was comfortable. I liked the simplicity.

I liked it and had some great times with it. In the few months I had it, I took an 8,000 mile road trip with it and it was a great companion. Story :

Former Xterra Owner

As a former 2006 Xterra owner I can say that I thought it was an awesome vehicle. It had lots of power, and the best part was it could be had with a smooth 6 speed manual transmission. It was a great utilitarian vehicle. Ended up trading it in with 120k and zero problems for a 2012 Subaru Outback when my first kid came along (gas mileage + safety + convenience with car seats). Finally got back to the bof vehicle that I actually prefer with the 2015 4Runner mainly because I convinced my wife a 3rd row would be useful with the grandparents after our 2nd kid arrived.

If anything, this just makes the 4runner more expensive next year. Less competition for the seller. What a bummer.

Resale value between the 4runner and the Xterra just made the answer so clear to me. I use the hell out of my 4runner and hope to run it into the ground, but every once in a while I will check KBB just to remind myself how good of a decision it was going with Toyota.

A friend who lived above Bass Lake CA (4700 feet elevation) bought a Nissan Xterra down in Fresno CA like 10 years ago. He drove home from the dealer up the hill and he said it had no power! He turned around half way home to return it. Another thing I hear a lot is that most Nissan's vehicles get bad gas mileage and maintenance costs are higher then other Japanese MFR's.

I had a friend down in San Diego that bought an Xterra and it really was bad with power. And everything inside felt cheap...Not a huge fan of Nissan trucks and SUV's

i have an 06 OFFROAD and the 4runner. I like them both, and the xterra has had zero reliability issues. The extra power is nice, and with the locker it does well off road. I have 33 duratracs, so it's not the best with gas.

Like someone above mentioned, the XTerra is not a 4R equilavent, the BOF Pathfinder was. Now that vehicle is a mini van

A coworker has a 2WD and he likes it, his second one, just purchased a 2015 on the basis they will no longer be made, he looked for a 4WD, but could not find one.

^ I totally agree. I own a JK [2 door] and am looking at replacing it w/ a 4Runner over a JKU[4 door]. 4Runner is much better vehicle, overall, than the JKU.

I agree, I think the 4R is in class by itself, look at what you get for the price. For what I paid for my 2015 TP, not to mention the Toyota quality, an equivalent would be a stripped down 2WD F150 with a ridiculous small V6 engine.

Not to rant, but what Ford is doing to their engine line, this ecoboost BS, is insane. I have driven Fords for 38 years and I will never buy another one, will keep my 77 Bronco though!!!
