Yakima Q-clips vs. landing pads?

Hey guys,
I'm working on replacing my Yakima loadwarrior basket with a set of crossbars with fairing over the front doors and a snowboard rack on the factory crossbars. I won't have a lot of weight(if any) on the new crossbars, maybe some lights on the front one. I know, I know, why get them then? Well I like the look and that isn't what I came here asking anyway.
Thing is, there are two different ways to mount the crossbars on the roof.

Can you help me decide which one?

Option 1: Yakima Q-clip tower
These are clips that lock on to the door jambs to secure.


Option 2: Yakima Control tower
This system has landing pads that can either mount to factory roof rails, or permanently bolt directly to the roof. If I went this route, I would bolt to the roof, which means drilling. I don't really have a problem with drilling, and can properly reseal the mount to be waterproof.

Both options are the same price, the Q-clips have the clips sold separately and the control towers have the landing pads sold separately, also the same price for both of those.


Here is like what I'm looking to do. But, with a snowboard rack on the factory roof rack also. Note: This one is using the door jamb clips.

Here is what my current setup is, I'm just so sick of the tire on top, can't even get into parking garages.
I NEED a snowboard rack for this winter. Got a big road trip planned.

By the way, the loadwarrior will soon be for sale, PM if interested. (also has spare tire mount and 2 sets of offroad light mounts)

since the q-clips secure to the door jambs you wont be able to use them because of your sunroof... correct me if i'm wrong, i've been drinkin some tonight lol

The bars will be high enough to not block the sunroof. And besides, i wont have any bars over the sunroof. One infront, one behind.

Oh ok I see what you're saying, iiiii get it now.
I think i like the control towers if i had to choose.

went with the Q-clips instead.
4x Q towers
4x Q-62 clips
2x 48" crossbars
44" fairing
Buttdown Aero snowboard rack

Hey Ripcord! I know this is an ancient thread but I'm in need of some aftermarket crossbars, either Thule or Yakima. Did the Yakima Q Towers slide directly into your stock roof rails?

if you look at the photo you quoted, you can see I have stock rails with stock crossbars still. The yakima stuff was for the front of the roof area.

Roof racks

I've done the exact same thing as in the picture. Q clips for the front bar when I need more length than the factory channels give me. I use Landing Pads for everyday use. I popped the end caps off the factory rail channels, slid the factory rail feet out and the Yakima Landing Pad feet in place. I use 58" bars as my standard bars. I like the ease of use of this system, but I'd suggest leaving the base of the factory aero rails in place, to allow lower profile bars, and use the higher Landing Pad feet setup for specific loads
