Yakima Top Box

REI had a sale and I stepped up to the top Yakima box. This one snaps onto the top rails in a few seconds, comes off just as easy too. The box has claws hanging from the bottom that grasp the reial. A simple lever on the inside secures each claw. Opens from either side, and good keyed locks too. Airlite construction which is supposed to the stuff they make light weight kayaks and canoes from.

Lots of rain on this 2500 mile trip with no leaks.

I've had the 4Runner for about 4 months now and have 15,000 miles on it.

Looks nice! Do you have pics showing the inside with something in there to show the scale- so we get an idea of how much stuff you can put int here?

I like the boxes but storing them can be a monster. I like the new Yak ones alot though

Yes, it is the 16. The 18 is way too long for the 4Runner IMHO.

This is a photo of how much of the sunroof is covered.

There is added wind noise with the box, so I kept the visor closed. There are dead bugs on the top of the glass which must be deflected from the leading edge of the box.

Here is how much stuff I carried.

The leading edge is rather thin so no thick bags. I also carried a bunch of soft stuff to fill the gaps.

The amount carried on top really made the difference in back. There were 4 of us traveling for 10 days to WDW. I used the rear shelf to divide all the small bags and crap. Worked very well. Having the "big" bags on top made the cargo area plenty big for everything else.

The top of the box is the same silver as the roof rack. Nice looking I think. Reflects the sun well too as the stuff inside the box did not overheat.

This airlite box is a lot lighter than the standard boxes. Which makes it easier to get up on top and store. I plan on placing 4 eye bolts into the garage ceiling and using rubber straps to afix the box to the eye bolts.

The 4Runner and top box are still a couple inches too tall to fit into a standard garage door.
