First off thats a very funny saying, couldn't be more true.
I totally agree with you, however you never "need" 4x4 until you really really need 4x4 haha.
even with no plans to go offroading i would always opt for 4wd if available. Even Atlanta gets some snow…
i know 2wd costs less in the first place however resale value has to be better with 4wd no?

Resale value is for sure better with 4wd. Two vehicles ago I had a 2wd Dodge Nitro. It was fully loaded but when it came time to trade it in, none of the features made a difference as it was 2wd. i got way less for the trade than I would have for a 4wd model.
Granted this is highly dependent upon where you live too.

Good call on the 4wd vs 2wd. Someday you may have to pull a babe out of a ditch and will be glad you got it. There is also a low miles 3rd gen that has been sitting on craigslist for months now, you bet its 2wd…
Also you will find there is a preference for all generations for different reasons. The beauty of 4runners is they are all (mostly all) great and different platforms for people with vastly different interest alignments. Its funny because i almost found myself thinking the same thing about 1st gens and then 3rd gens. I realized it was easy to just make myself think each were the most in demand at different times.
They are all in demand!

New member here, sorry if this is a little off topic but I noticed that some comments saying something to the effect of only using 4wd once a year. The manual says the 4wd needs to be engaged and driven once per month. I've done this and never had a problem until I tried to put it into 4lo. It took a while and lots of grinding noise but it eventually engaged. Just FYI, use 4hi and 4lo, or lose it!

So admittedly I didn't read the whole thread, unforunately one of the down fall of forums for me is I strt getting a short attention span...... to the thread starter I say this. From what you describe get the 2X, save your money, and enjoy life. It doesn't sound like you re doing any off road with it and as far as towing goes, yeah your missing a little weight in the front but I doubt you'll ever know the difference. When It comes to launching boats I've been doing it a long time and not once have I ever even considered wanting to have 4X to get up a ramp (and against popular belief CA does have some ugly ramps, at least where I am), a little throttle control is all you need, I've done it in lifted trucks, lowered trucks, six cylinders, 8 cylinders, 4X, 2X, heck did it once in an old limo and a rhyno, heck I've had a jeep cherokee deep enough I floated a jet ski out the back (took a bit to dry the inside on that one)... point being no worries, relax and throttle control. on a side bar my buddy towed my tournament wakeboard boat with his T4R (V6) better than my other buddies F150 (V8)
