Yet another newbie question

I am considering purchasing a new 2006 4Runner, probably the V6. The plan originally called for a used Landcruiser, but good clean examples without eleventy billion miles on them are a rarity. After a test drive of the 4Runner, I am more or less sold on the truck.

The local dealers here seem to have them in inventory by the hundreds (literally), some are advertising a $2,000 rebate. I was wondering if approximately $1,500 under invoice is a reasonable price to shoot for, provided I buy a truck they have on the lot, etc.?

Not really that picky about the color either, silver or Shadow Mica would work for me...

250 over invoice was the lowest price I could get my dealer to give me if I bought a car off their lot. But they car I wanted was at another dealer so I had to pay 500 over invoice..they refused to go lower. However that price was before the rebate ($1,500).

You could probably pick up a v6 or v8 sport edition for about $29,000 after rebate. I'm not sure how much that is over/under invoice. I Think that you can get the v8s for about the same as the v6 now.

My friend got his '05 v6 SE about 10 mo. ago for about that.

Why do you suppose that is ? Because of gas ? I often wondered why the market seems to be going down the crapper but everyone is building bigger , better more HP fullsize truck's and suv's with bigger and bigger engine's. A guy at work wanted to trade his f150 crew cab 4x4 2002 and the dealer would'nt even take it . Well they would but for next to nothing for a mint truck, he could'nt even afford to get rid of it.

One thing I did notice back in Feb 06 when I bought my runner was they seem to hold the best value or atleast one of the best. Think of the hit in depreciation on GM SUV's and Lincoln SUV's .....talk about major !!

I think the general SUV market is down the crapper. Look at GM offering $1.99 gas for the first year for their trucks. (One way of suckering in someone trying to buy a smaller car.) But it doesn't appear to me that 4Runner's market is slowing down by much. Another factor that I think plays in is although the 4Runner sells pretty well, BUT the past and current volume isn't high enough that there's a gazillion of them sitting on the lots. In my area, the Jan '06 rebate was $1500 and it hasn't changed since.

May '06 Toyota Lexus sales. There isn't much of a drop for a May '05 vs. May '06, but current year to date, there's a quite a jump in sales too.
