Yet another rear wheel bearing thread...

Actually I'm just trying to see if anyone knows if the Toyota - Koyo 6308T rear wheel bearing (Toy# 90363-40020-77) is actually just a Koyo 63082RS?

The 2RS signifies a molded rubber seal on both sides of the bearing which seals against both the outer and inner races. I cannot find out what the "T" is supposed to mean on the OEM 6308T...my dealer conspiracy meter tells me it just means "Toyota Red Seals" to hide the fact that it is just the 2RS which is CONSIDERABLY cheaper than buying from even Camelback.

the 63082RS can be had for around $27 vs $49 from Marlin vs $69 from Camelback vs $100+ from Dealer.

NAPA also sells Koyo bearings but they are 6308WPS with a "NAPA" blue seal.

The "T" and "WPS" do not show up in any nomenclature info from Koyo which tells me it's probably some internal code...Just doesn't seem to make financial sense to have so many different manufacturing specs for the same bearing just based on distributor. I could be wrong though....frequently am. Just thought I'd throw it out there and see if anyone knew?

Bumping and old thread, but just curious if you found an answer for this bearing nomenclature?

Both the rear and front wheel bearings don't look that special, but buying the "official" part with it's special part number will cost atleast double in comparison to a good quality SKF or Timken bearing from a local bearing shop using the standard bearing numbering system of 6308.

Would anyone also know a cross reference part for the front bearings?
 
Here is my input for OEM bearing and non-OEM (koyo, Nachi SKF, etc,). I witlessness the difference after installing the bearings to the axle shaft.
If you try to spin the dust shield by hand, the OEM bearing will spin freely. The non-OEM bearing going to be bit tight. As a result, the non-OEM breaing will wear out faster.
 
Koyo is eom supplier to Toyota, among others. I would feel confident in using it as a replacement for the more expensive Toyota labeled bearings.

That's not really a good metric for determining if a bearing is good or not. Koyo is in fact an OEM bearing supplier. The reason why your older bearing spins more freely is likely because it has worn out or the grease has dried up/flushed out. Checking the axle plate for lateral and radial play is a better way to determine if the old bearing is worn.

Either way, Koyo, Nachi, SKF are top tier bearing manufacturers and I believe many of the OEM Toyota part numbers for the various bearings can be cross-referenced via the standard bearing naming convention.

SKF, Koyo, Timken, or anyone else... the bearing nomenclature of "6308-2RS1-C3" is the industry standard way of defining that particular bearing of that dimension (ID, OD, Width), deep groove ball design, with two rubber seals, and C3 clearance.

So the bearing in your link would be a direct replacement to the OEM part.

That's weird, not sure about that. It seems different manufacturers use different nomenclature to define the seals.

eg. SKF calls it 2RS1, Nachi calls it 2NSE9. Either way, it all means the same thing: two NBR rubber contact seals on a stainless steel backing plate.
 
I did a bunch of reading into bearing sizing and it appears that although the rear bearings fall under a standard size for the single row deep groove type bearing, the fronts do not. For whatever reason, it seems Toyota went with a non standard size for the double row tapered bearings for the front.

So you basically have to get the front bearings from a parts store or the dealer because it's a specialty part. Rear bearing you can just use the 6308 sizing and get a cheaper, quality bearing from any local bearing supplier. Feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

I got OEM toyota bearings and another guy got another name brand for his axles, but not OEM. BOTH were NEW.
Got both pairs of axles installed at the same location:
After installing all 4 beaings on the 4 axles , the tech guy showed me the difference of OEM bearing and the other brand.

For those who are interested, I skipped looking for rear axle bearings from industrial bearing suppliers. They definitely can be found there, but it was WAAAAY easier and even cheaper to just buy the kits through Marlin Crawler.

They use Koyo or Nachi bearings who are also an OEM supplier...depends on their stock i believe...I recieved Nachi bearings.
