I have been trying to research as much as possible, but it is proving challenging. I am deployed in Afghanistan with poor internet access and no phones to call anyone with knowledge. I am hoping you can help me figure some things out. I would really value your help.

I have a 2005 SR5 V6. It is stock right now. I would like to build a rig I can climb in mountains or explore the dessert. I plan on adding weight like a front bumper and winch and plenty of gear in the back. I will also tow a boat on occasion.

After what research I have been able to do I would like to order OW 2.5" bore coilover and rear shock setup. I would like to get some clearance but not go beyond the 3" barrier.
I am thinking now about a 16" wheel with a 33"-35" tire but I am not sure yet.

I was hoping for your input especially regarding other parts I might want to consider to build a solid off-road rig. I have about $5000 to use right now and will invest more after I return from deployment.

I would sincerely appreciate any advice you can offer. I am looking forward to spending time on this board and will post progress pics and give feedback when I am able. Thanks.

I dont think 3" of lift will fit 35" tires without a significant amount of rub. I'd do the 33's if 3 inch is your max. As for other parts it depends on what kind of terrain you plan on playing in

I will want to be able explore some rough terrain. I had a 4x4 F150 years ago that someone else modified. I spent time in the Sierra Nevada Mountains pushing it to its limits. I never really learned what was going on underneath the truck so I am only now beginning to understand all that is involved. I am not sure about things like the Upper Control Arm and when I will need a mod. Things someone just getting started might not think about.

If I order the Overland Wearhouse kit are there other parts I will want to get at the same time?

The UCA's will come into play when you lift. They have two major functions: 1) The allow the front-end to be aligned to the proper spec after lifting. 2) The allow a little more tire clearance for when the steering wheel is deflected fully. Especially necessary when going for a lift/tire combo like you're talking about.

A couple of other things you may want are a swaybar relocate kit (cheap), a rear brakeline extension/bracket relocate and finally if going all the way 3"+ a diff drop (not necessary but some folks like them). All three items cost under $150 total. Depending on how you manage the rear brakeline maybe way under $150.

I'd go with the Total Chaos UCA, and considering the weight you're referring to with mods and gear, email Deaver Suspension and tell them what you are planning to do with your truck, what weight your adding, etc. Have them build you a custom set of dual rate coils for the back. The dual rate will give you good ride when you are running the street without gear and handle better off road when you are loaded down. They're not that much more expensive then off the shelf. I'd also recommend staying with 33's. No need to do all that trimming, and unless you are planning to re-gear, 35's might be a bit much with the V6 when it comes to towing your boat. Others with that set-up might be able to give better advice there.

Another suggestion, replace the stock skids with BudBuilt skids and get some sliders to protect your truck. The stock skids won't last long if you wheel it hard.

If you do all above, then all you need are some good trails and time to enjoy them.

To all the above replies thank you. I am really excited about this project and want to learn all I can. I have been reading threads you guys have posted and have gone from zero to at least moving. :zoom: There is so much to learn.

I am going to look into everything you guys have said and will start ordering soon. I need to order while I can because I get much more pity from my wife while deployed. How can she give me that look like there are better things to buy? :shrug:

I lost internet for a while, but I did just send you a message. I am thinking about spending the money now and going with a Mid-travel kit. I suppose if we are going to spend 10 Billion dollars a month here in Afghanistan then some of that money might as well go toward an awesome rig. :brav:cheers::boink:
