Hey guys and gals,

So, after spending much time on the forum reading and sifting through the posts, I am semi regretting buying 2010 Limited in a 4x2 and now a 4x4. I know, I know...should have listened. Of course, I dont actually need it, but I feel I could have quite a bit more fun on some camping trips if I had it...

I actually got my 4x2 used. The previous owner decided the SUV wasnt big enough for her after 3k miles and returned the vehicle. It worked out in my favor because I got it fully loaded for $37k. The same vehicle at the dealership is now selling for $44k. I feel I received a very good deal, to include the Certified Used extended warranty to 100k miles.

My question is do you think I have any leverage heading back to ask for a 4x4? The truck now has almost exactly 10k miles and is still in the same condition as it was when it left the dealership in April (partly due to me being in Iraq and the truck having a good wax and garaged kept).

If I purchased for $37k that means theyll value the vehicle now for around $33k Im sure (I cant use KBB yet as the 2010 4Runner used it not an option). This is a full $10k under what the new ones on the lot are going for.

Have I sealed the deal or do I have a course of action?

You guys and gals here are great, so if you have any recommendations Im all ears! Thanks and talk to you soon!

Jas

I think the bottom line is you are going to be out 4 or 5 thousand if you trade it to the dealer again. There's nothing you can do. If you really want to sell it and get a 4x4 maybe sell it privately.

Agreed, if not more. 4 months and 7 thousand miles will depreciate it quite a bit. :(

If you already own the thing then just keep it. However, if you just have to get a 4x4 then I would definitely sell it privately vs trading.

Yikes... this is a serious bummer. I agree with the other posters, to get the most coin out of the 4x2, ya gotta sell it privately.

Glad you own it outright and aren't in a potentially negative equity situation like many would be, so that's definitely in the Plus column. If you're in the Military (THANK YOU) - this could be in your favor trying to sell it, because you could simply say, you don't need it - or your financial priorities have changed... this will comfort people and they won't think something is wrong with it. Can the 100K warranty be transferred to a new owner?

You'd be surprised how many people go through the exact same thing - they buy something and end up changing their minds. Most dealers assume these folks have little concern for $$$ and assume they're prepared to take the financial hit. You might try going to another dealer outside your area and see what they would do for you.

Sell it privately. There are lots of people out there looking for slightly used 2010 models (I'm looking for a 2010 Prius, in fact).

I just mentioned selling my GTI a few weeks back. Last week I got a call from my barber. Today he's taking it home. Sad to see it go, but it is the right move. It is redundant to my 4Runner in a lot of ways and compromised when it comes to truly being a "sports car". Plus, VWs don't age well. So, I'm looking at the polar opposites: Honda S2000/Mazda MX-5 or Toyota Prius/Honda Fit.

Thanks for all the quick replies yall. I figured I was stuck but wanted some expert opinions! I still havent decided if I can deal with it or not. You know how it is when you get the bug!

fxoffroad, I am not military (I got out about four years ago now), I just contract over here from time to time. Ive got a few Toyotas in my area and also travel to Atlanta and Virginia a lot, so Im going to start doing some research. The Toyota near me has over 50 4x4 Limiteds right now (well, online inventory which goes through SE Toyota i assume)! I think things might get better as they look at having to move in the 2011's.

So, where is the best place to sell the vehicle online, eBay? Ive also got a 2009 Harley Fat Boy I just might sell, too...!

Thanks again!

Local Craigslist. Getting a Carproof done would be a great selling feature as well. Only sell it if really need 4wd though. I have 4wd bu only because I drive ip to the mountain in winter a lot and like to explore the occasional forest service road. With the amount of money you are going to lose you could rent a 4x4 occasionally. Realistically what will you be needing it for?

Craigslist all the way!

I was offered just $4,000 on my 2001 Tacoma Prerunner at the dealer for trade-in. Ended up selling after 2 months on craigslist for $10,000.

I've heard of stories where the dealers give a good price on a trade-in, but that usually just means they won't be willing to budge as much on the price of the car you want to get.

Sell your car and then go in to buy the 4x4... the dealer comes out on top each time you do a transaction with them so try to avoid them as much as possible.

While I agree that private sale will probably be the best I fail to understand why you wouldn't drive the vehicle to the dealer and ask him what his best deal would be. Tell him you are willing to do private and buy the new 4X4 elsewhere so what is he willing to do.

That gives you a number to start with........

Because they will ask you for a deposit even to talk numbers and if you don't follow through they will make it the hardest thing in the world to get your deposit back. It's so bad that I feel embarrassed for them that they have to carry on business like that. It's like a bad circus act.

Because the dealer ALWAYS comes out ahead, and even going in there and talking to them is the most irritating scenario. I have dealt with them a lot in the past and will NEVER do it again. I have a friend who is the manager at a dealership; I went there once looking for a deal and he went into "non-friend" mode. It was the wierdest thing. Avoid them like the plague.

Is that a Canadian way of doing business or something? A deposit just to talk numbers? That wouldn't fly down here south of the border.

I agree. That doesn't sound like the norm. You should talk to the salesman and manager you dealt with and see what they can put together. If you don't like what they will give you in trade, then sell it privately. If they have 50 on the lot, that is a good thing for you. They should be willing to wheel and deal.

The problem will be with them putting the number you want for your truck. The longer you wait the more expensive it is going to be to get your 4x4 since your car will keep depreciating.

If there is a carmax where you live try bringing the car to them and see what they would buy the car for. Sometimes they would give you more than your typical dealership. Besides you don't have to buy from them so they would give you a bottom price, as if you where to go to a dealership they would appraise lower to make profit. Good luck and post what they offer. Also thanks for your service.

What he said. You can definitely sell your car privately for more through listing it on cars.com or autotrader.com but then there is the hassle of dealing with buyers. I sold my car to Carmax and they gave me a fair price-more than what the dealers were willing to give me. Their offer is good for 7 days so you have time to think about it and possibly find another buyer who is willing to pay more. Something to consider.

You already have a nice 4x4 with the Tundra. Why do you need another one? The Limited can be your highway or nice ride out vehicle. If it's paid for just enjoy it.

You will get more selling it out rite but trading you will save sales tax. If your rig is worth 30k I don't know what tax is where you are but here its 7% on so thats over 2000 in sales tax savings.

Just an update: I got on KBB recently and valued my 2010 4R trade-in at 36k (Excellent condition) and 35k (Good condition). This is just under what I purchased the 4R for. I think I might follow through on this trade assuming I can get this much. Ive found some leftover 2010's and some new 2011's that match what Im looking for (even a 2011 TE with Nav and KDSS!). Now I just need to decide Limited 4x4 vs TE! Thanks for all the info yall. Im still exploring all possibilities...
