So My 4runner leaking with Synthetic and My Land Rover leaking with synthetic are just total bullsh!t then? They dont leak on non synthetic.

I know why it leaks, the cars had alot of miles with conventional oil which was thick enough to fill up any small holes that leak, the sythetic broke down that old oil at the seals and caused minor leaks. I find it easier to run non synthetic, in these vehicles, the jetta on the other hand looks brand new at 260+ k miles with all synthetic.

Your seals are bad which if you have run synthetic from the beginning probably would not be happening. if you are telling me that you basically are relying on engine sludge to keep the oil in your car then synthetic is the least of your problems.

Bad seals are bad seals, so if a tiny thin film of harden sludge is what is keeping everything from leaking then I have to question why would anyone ever use petroleum based oil if it does that to the engine.

I agree. I have had leaks come up in rear mains and axle seals directly after fluid changes to synthetic. You won't convince me that it's a myth.

In 34 years I have never had any such problems with the many different vehicles of every size and shape, from VW 4 cylinders, to dirt bikes, to V6s V8s and a diesel V8, my pressure washer, all my old lawn mowers, you name it all run synthetic the week I get them.
Only difference I have seen is the engine running smoother and usually picking up a tiny bit better gas mileage.

My wifes Lexus which is famous for engine sludge is 12 years old with 140,000 miles and clean as whistle inside.

I would run synthetic from the beginning if given the choice. I was disagreeing that an engine had major problems if (when synthetics were used) leaks started. This is one the many issues though I guess when buying used. You want to run synthetic in a vehicle with 100k miles that has always had conventional oil, you're going to find some leak issues in seals. I do think synthetic is the way to go, just be prepared to replace seals.

I think it's a stretch to call it a collector and an asking price and getting price are two different things. That 4Runner was stickered for around $37,000 so it has lost a third (based on asking price) over 12 years so not really an investment.


As far as synthetic oil goes I wouldn't put it in a vehicle with say 150k on it but I switched over several Toyota trucks to synthetic right around 100k miles and no leaks period and my '99 has 165k on it now. I love being able to just change my oil every 8000 miles or once a year and I save money and know my engine oil is designed to maintain a stable temp no matter how hard I push it off road.

The important thing is to switch early in the vehicle's life and the majority of synthetic users never go back to dino oil so synthetic is a proven fluid and not a danger to engines.

Also mentioning a LandRover leaking is usually a problem in them with just dino oil and is well documented on Rover forums as a problem so I'm not surprised one leaks with synthetic.

original tires? Wouldn't trust those for any kind of highway driving. They might be fine in tread wear for sure, but I myself would not trust it.

Admirable to find a vehicle with that low of miles but you can be sure it will need maintenance from lack of use.

Well on Thursday I am changing all the oil, ATF, gear lube, etc to synthetic.
The PO used what he called "part synthetic" which is about like being part pregnant.
It has over 158,000 miles on it, will let you know what happens.

I say my odds are about 95% that no leaks will form.

To get back on topic, I still can't believe that price. Better yet, I can't believe that someone would drop the cash on it.

I ended up paying 20500$ usd. for it, and a bit of cash to fly a friend down and drive it back. Tires were amazing besides the fact they were 12 years old and decided to chance it,made it home with out a hitch. Oil looked new so he drove it back giving it a good work out through the mountains, then switched it to RedLine 5w30.
Did all the inspection blah blah stuff, all was perfect, and got Toyota to flush, drain change ect all fluids. I did the Deck plate mod, tranny cooler, scan gauge, another set of rims for winter, rid of stock muffer and SuperTrapp installed.............Can't seem to keep my hands off ofa her lol.

Some will say that's too much for a 12 year old truck, ya probably right, but I ended up with something I thought I'd never own. To me the 2000 3rd gen is the nicest 4 runner from a-z.

I also own a 2000 2wd 5sp 4cy ext cab Taco from new, and I remember spending more time in the 4 runner at the dealership than the truck I was goina buy lol. I've always wanted a 4 runner one but couldn't afford a 50,000$ cad. truck, till this baby came up.


I'm so happy with hows she's ran, got 22,000 miles on it now, and its been everything I've dreamed of. I really feel good sitting it her, the 4 runner is a Top Quality capable vehicle and now I know what other 4 runner owners feel when they drive theirs.

Just an update since this thread has popped back up.

After changing every fluid to synthetic when I got it with 158,000 miles on it. It does not leak one single drop from anywhere.
About to do my second oil change next Monday.

Looks like you got a real nice one there! My biggest issue around here is seeing high prices on ones that are brought from the East coast and that are covered in rust. I just think that's dirt pool.

I'm glad you had a good experience with 405 motors, I have heard nothing but quite the opposite.

Lots and lots of vehicles rebuilt from out of state with washed titles.
