So I was talking to a buddy of mine who builds custom made 4x4's and what not. From time to time I come in to give my .02 on a build why I do not know but he asks me. Anyhow, the topic of what is your dream 4x4 to have or have built.

This is a subjective I know because we all have different wants/needs etc. So I'll ask you all this same question. If you could have any 4x4 and money was not the issue at all and you could daily dive it what would you roll in and use to explore this world in.

I'm interested to see the different ideas on what a 4x4 is to you and what we all like and have tastes in. I know that it will be Toyota heavy I'm guessing but I'll be honest my number one is not going to be the Toyota. Everything else will be for me but my number one pick might supprise alot of you.

Any pre-87 Jeep(I hate Chrysler jeeps). I'm gonna say something controversial and all but I love Jeep way more than Toyota..... (I know let the bashing begin).
I have an 87(yes I realize that it is technically a Chrysler jeep but it has mostly amc parts from the factory on it) and my dad has an 83 CJ-7. Both are mildly built and they both are mostly original.

My dream 4x4 is a Willys Jeep Truck/Willys Wagon. I drool over these. The styling is great and done right they look better than any vehicle out there. I almost bought a pickup that needed a full restoration 2 years ago but it was sold before I could get back to the owner. Since then I've been on the lookout for one, waiting to pick it up. I'd also consider a Jeep Gladiator as a close second and in a distant 3rd it'd be an FJ40

I dunno about ideal for off-roading, a lot of options there but, for a bit of street and off-road mix... think about the G-Wagon for a moment.

  • AMG V8, hand-built.
  • Twin turbo.
  • Front, center, and rear locked.
  • German engineering (Which we all know is a gift and a curse).


What else could you ask for? Those are specs that Toyota 4x4 guys wet dream of.

Now, I didn't know this -- but apparently for the spoiled rich folks, you can even get these in V12 now with 600HP for $220k.

There is a hug difference between a Jeep of today and a Jeep of the days past. I'm sorry but there is no comparing them at all. I get it.

I have drove one and put many of miles on one in Iraq and hated it. Maybe the more street one could be tolerated but it was small inside to say the least.
 
I'd take a Mercedes G63 AMG 6x6, decontent most of the luxury bullshit out of it; add in additional armor (i.e. true front & rear metal bumpers, solid rock sliders, ect), additional functionality (larger storage tank for running tools, beefy winch, ect) and make it less rich ass-hat's weekend toy and more heavy duty military-spec vehicle like the original 6x6 it's based off.

Though honestly I'd probably want something more like a heavily modified J120/J150 framed 4th or 5th gen with either a Fortified and Supercharged 3UR-FE or built-up 1VD-FTV 4.5L V8 Diesel running LC200 drivetrain with heavily modified Long-Travel Suspension, beefier front and rear differentials, reinforced or completely replaced transfercase, fully armored up and read to roll...
 
I like the Unimog but I think it's probably a bit too big for tight curves and narrow trails, plus it's probably not too great on the highway.

I'd settle for LawnDart's 4Runner. :)
 
I think this is my dream 4x4. I've always loved the Defender 110s in all generations.

I agree with you on the classic Jeeps. My 91 Grand Wagoneer was one of the 3 or 4 out of the 30+ vehicles I've owned that I wish I had kept. It was a tank off-road and a luxury car on the road. I miss it a lot.
