I'm in the market for a 97-99 T4r. Im expecting it to have about 140,000 miles or so. My question is:
1) Is it common for these vehicles to have a rebuilt tranny or engine? Or are these easily 200,000 miles vehicles?
2) I'll expect to already have had it's 90,000K service.
3) Is $6,500 a fair price?
4) Anything else I should be on the lookout for?

1) i had to get my tranny rebuilt at like 120k but it for the most part never happens, even the mechanic said it.

2) water pump and timing belt would what you would need to look for 3
3) i have seen them for about that price, a 99 probably can sell for around 8 depending on what is all on it.
4) if you looking for a comfort or luxury deal, go with a limited. if you want just the basics SR5s are nice. if you want it for wheeling find a 99 4wd. they have taller coils on them. and if you can get any model with a locker you are all set.

Toyota's seem to be a fairly expensive ride to buy in comparison to other car and truck makers. But it is worth it in the long run. They are incredible machines and if they are looked after they will keep running into the 200k and over range. When I got my 97 it had 120k's on it and was very tidy. I got mine for $7400 and thought I got a good deal. My dad got a 99 with 148k on it yesterday for $7500 which is a really good deal. I've always gone by kelly blue book to some degree.

In my experience the asking price for a toyota has been way more than kbb price but like my dad has always said, "it's only worth what you are willing to pay." Be honest with the seller and yourself about what you are willing to pay and don't take for granted that the truck runs good. Do the research. Listen to the engine. Ask about how the truck has been driven etc. Ask the hard questions and take note of how the seller responds. You can tell a lot about a person if you listen to them. See if they are honest etc. I personally get all the info I can about the truck, blue book it, see how close the figures are and go from there. I've even straight out asked the seller why they thought it was worth so much more than the blue book price. Take a friend who knows about trucks and look and listen and check as much as you can.

Remember. Another truck WILL come along if you are willing to wait. Try to keep emotion out of it. Look for a sound truck.

In my experience the engine and tranny will last and last, IF it's taken care of (toyota rules!). It's the little things like hose's etc that will start to go in time. I drove a 93 4runner the other day with 350k's on it. The owner had done a little engine work and NO tranny work. And it ran very well. At 90,000 the timing belt should have been changed, but ask the guy, and see if he has records. Check the belt for cracks. Some toyota parts even have the year they were put in printed on them. This can help tell you if the owner has maintained it or not.

Mileage wise largely depends on how you take care of it. We have a customer who has almost 400K on his 96 taco 3.4 and only major thing we have done is replaced the cyl heads. Not bad for that mileage
