Yuge Backorder on TRD Oil Filter

This is strange...
looking up the part at Toyota it says this part is no longer available.
Stopped by my local Toyota Parts department (where I purchased one of these about a month ago) and they said they nearly 500 orders on backorder through out the US.
So this part may in fact be gone... at least for a while.

I ordered the Purple Royal 20-968 from Summit but these look hard to find too.

The Frams looks terrible with the card board end cap while the other manufacturers have metal end caps. Even top tier Frams have cardboard end caps.
 
All of you showing places that "have them in stock" I dare you to try ordering...
here's the response you will get-
I've gotten it after placing several orders
"We have placed your order on hold. We don't have these oil filters in stock and neither does Toyota. Unfortunately, there are none in the country. Could take a few months to come in. Please let us know if you are willing to wait for them or if you want to cancel the order."

My 4 Royal Purple filters (aka Amsoil aka TRD) from Summit showed up late last week. I’m good for awhile
 
The fleece type oil filters (like the Royal Purple, TRD, Amsoil for the 4R) is all Merceds Benz recommends. Volvo too according to a friend of mine. I used Mann brand fleece type oils filters in my MB and I would buy them for my 4R if I could find them.

You’ll see in this thread the “YZZ” code oil filters etc. are the budget line Toyota has.

Air filter changed

I will avoid these now that I know about this.

Maybe so, but it can't be that much or would make any difference when doing regular oil change intervals. The Wix perform very well for $10, especially when the TRD cant be had

Yes, I like the WIX brand filters. Been using them for 25+ years on all my vehicles. Will likely be using them on my new 4Runner ...

I'm not sure I follow your train of thought here. Better filtration is just that, better. Nothing to argue about it, and I respect that you may think it isn't needed.

It's cheap insurance for peace of mind knowing you're doing all you can when it comes to filtering. That's all.

Some of us are nerds and send in our oil for analysis, and a better filter is one thing we can do to improve those figures. :plane:

I 100% understand the wanting to use the absolute best. Nerd away. My point was comparing a Napa Gold to a TRD, to me, is very very close. Especially when doing normal oil change intervals. Now, comparing a Fram to a TRD or Napa Gold is a completely different story.
 
Just a borderline Nerd here that has been using Fram filters on all 10 Toyota vehicles that I've owned and driven hundreds of thousands of miles over the last 36 years. I ordered some Royal Purple filters for my 2016 4runner, as I like the fact that they are USA made, and have a good reputation with the oil Nerds here on the forum. One quick question though....Could increased filtration result in decreased flow?

Yes, it will (naturally), but I think it is negligible.

'Basically, filters trade efficiency for flow rates. A perfect filter would eliminate all debris with no reduction in oil flow rate, but this – as yet – is not possible. In order for a filter to really clean the oil, it will present some restriction to flow. This means that at any one time, a certain amount of oil is by-passed around the filter. This happens with any filter, regardless of design. If an increased oil flow rate is necessary – as with an oil filter intended for race engines, this will use a material that will allow more oil flow – which generally means it will not filter quite as efficiently as a production car filter. Fram, for example, also makes racing filters that feature a thicker-wall container and a different filter material that allows a higher flow rate. These filters are generally not as efficient in cleaning in the 10 to 20 micron range because the understanding is that a race engine will change the oil and filter far more often than a street-driven engine.'
