Power Steering Flush and Reservoir Cleaning

Howdy Dudes and Dudettes,

If you ever wanted to know how to flush your power steering system, here's a video that shows you how to "Getter Dun". As a bonus, we show you how to remove the power steering reservoir and clean out the fine mesh filter. Over time, especially if you haven't renewed your fluid on a regular basis, the fine mesh filter on the bottom of the power steering reservoir can become blocked up with black gunk and starve your steering rack of fluid. Cleaning the filter screen ensures a good flow of fluid to your steering rack and puts less strain on the pump.

Tim,

What's your favorite fluid to use in the PS system? (Maybe you mention in the video, I haven't checked yet).

I'm not Tim, but the consensus is split between PS fluid and ATF.

I run a toyota PS box on the pickup in my sig and I have run both. I actually preferred PS fluid in that box/truck but both worked.

Nice touch showing how to clean out the reservoir. I don't think I've seen any other vids or write ups showing that & is something that I've never done but will be doing it the next time my ps flush is due. Thanks for all the hard work!

Well........ The owners manual specifies Dextron II or Dextron III ATF. Sooooo, I followed that recommendation and used an ATF that works for Dextron III applications. Dex/Merc is one of those ATFs that works for our power steering system and automatic transmissions.

Here's the part number for the o-ring on the PS reservoir. Mine broke in half, so I had to order a new one (actually ordered two incase one broke). They run about $3.33 each.

Did I miss the verdict? Is the steering any smoother?

Besides the maintenance aspect it's always fun to know the ole seat of the pants conclusion of the work done

I put the result in the video description because we had to wait for a report back from Jax. Hey said the steering improved quite a bit. The steering was smoother and no whining on tight turns.

Thanks Brian. Sean and I are having a good time making videos. We like the feedback we've been getting and we've met a whole lot of cool dudes along the way. [MENTION=148218]JZiggy[/MENTION] who just commented on this thread being one of them. It's really rewarding to hear back from people letting us know how we enabled them to handle their own maintenance, repairs and mods saving them hundreds if not thousands of dollars. It's been a fun ride so far and I don't anticipate we'll get bored with making videos any time soon.
 
I just watched the Power Steering flush video and I plan to do this in the near future. Good stuff. Now I just need to liberate mom's turkey baster.

The rubber return hose between the rack and hardline on my truck is sweaty as all heck. I'm gonna replace that section of hose.

I also read somewhere about a guy that extended the reservoir (cut and welded 2 together) which seems a neat idea.

Right on, thanks Tim. Sounds like a good one to put on the to do. You guys have some awesome videos, makes me want to keep my 2000 even more because of the resources and support from this community. Can't wait to get mine running right.
