I picked up a 1997 for $400
pink milk shake
rocken the rusty spare
rockers pretty much gone
frame is marginally solid, not gaping holes but she is well on her way

replace the trans

so I pulled out the old pink milk trans

went out and found a used 240K out of 1998 lim for $150. I had to pull it myself so... at least I was able to verify it had not been opened up before and it was in great shape.

cleaned off the bell housing and replaced the filter. cleaned off the pan and got everything back together. As a side note: don't ever flip the trans over with the pan attached. remove the pan then you can flip it over. this way you don't risk getting all the pan gunk into the valve body. govern yourself accordingly people!

Because I had to destroy the old hard lines and the donor vehicle was rusted to nuggets I decided to try just flex trans line 3/8 ID. None of that hard line crap this time she said!

so I took some 3/8 steel line and did the inverted flair then made the dimples. it's actually really easy to make the bubble flairs with a little practice. I should shoot a video. Anywho, the Toyota unions for the trans use M16x1.5 tube nut. I did splurge for 2 new O-rings on the union to trans connection. worth it.

put the trans back in and it's been running perfect for 115 miles.

I know somebody will chime in at some point and tell me hey the exhaust will melt those rubber lines you know? My response is going to be... well yea have you ever tried it? yea well I have and it's 100% fine people, fine absolutely nothing wrong whatsoever. just make sure you zip tie it up to the engine mount or the CV axle will wear a hole in it. don't ask me how I know that, ok. good then. jesus I need to stop putting stuff out on the internet after eating at red lobster on bottomless Margarita night.

and here is the zip tie to engine mount routing pattern. yes I did use 2 zip ties because if 1 zip tie failed I wanted to make sure I had a backup. I figured why take chances.

keyfob

Of course the truck came with a key, no keyfob. any self respecting T4R owner needs a keyfob right?

I think this is the part number for this ECU

I'm still looking for the instructions on how to program this little gem. if anybody knows how to do it? I would love to know. I will post up those instructions and maybe even shoot a video of doing it. maybe.

battery

Ok this is for sure one of my fav things about this truck. the battery is held in place by a wooden wedge. yes that is a wooden shim and it holds the battery in that spot. NICE!

door rain seals

so why would you just rip the rain seals off? no idea? I can tell you the doors rattle and it sounds like your riding in a wind tunnel without them. I put a call in to a source and have secured some used ones for $10 each.

My $20 investment to get both used rain seals paid off big time. door now close with a nice solid bump. no more wind tunnel sound at highway speeds. very nice!

I think inebriated home remodeling is vastly underrated. At least demolition. Maybe I could give the Gaines a run for their money with my own show.

I saw a battery held onto the front left fender panel using only a bra strap. No battery box. Kudos for the Victoria Secret tensile strength. Second place goes to someone using spray foam in the battery box and then setting the battery on top of said wet foam. I may be able to find the pic of that one.

Like the new tranny lines. I would have just found a suitable replacement 3/8 brass barb and attached them. No use of stainless steel drive worm clamps though?

a guy has to draw the line someplace and I draw that line @ worm drive clamps. they freak me out, I just can't use them.

I am not a fan of them either but stainless steel spring loaded clamps aren't cheap, or at least the ones I have found that are that small. My problem is salt water and have lost a spring clamp or two over time.

I always made a point of stopping in at Red Lobster in Duluth on my way home to Thunder Bay... Always crossed the border with those Cheddar Bay Biscuits!

The battery in my 4th gen was held down with a bungie cord. Sad part is, they had just replaced the battery in May... so I'm sure someone threw it in the garbage somewhere.
 
drivers seat sketch

No idea why but somebody decided to rip the drivers seat out at some point. probably because the bolt was rusted or maybe zombies? anyways, having a wobbly drivers seat is kind of annoying so I grabbed a M10 I think that was long enough to go all the way thru and secured it. Now I have a solid drivers seat. this truck has so much sketch in it.

front parking/Marker lights dead

So.... in 1997 the fuse for the front parking/marker lights share the taillights. All the lights on the truck function mostly. tons of stuff is burnt in the gauge cluster but... that will be a different post I think.

the mystery of the front marker lights is going to be a painful one I think.
The headlights work just fine.
The turn signals also just fine.
Brake lights, yes good.
Tail lights, check no problem.
Reverse yep no trouble.
trailer lights... um hmmm no something is not good here. but something is also focked up with trailer lights.

after a little looking yes that seems like an issue?

I guess I will have to start tracing the wires for the markers and find out where the trouble is at... darn was hoping
 
Cold air intake upgrade

I updated the air intake to a 99+ with the re-pin the MAF to match the 99+

Here is the programming instructions:

EDIT: your 1997 will need a black FOB. Your ECU is different, but I'd imagine the instructions are similar. JayRolla posted how he did his 1996. The way I understand it is that 1996-1997 used your system, and it was slightly revised in 1998 and used until 1999 until the RS3200 was an option from the factory:

the guy I got the transmission from, every once in a while you run into somebody who is a bro. just happy to get something rather than nothing.

I have done a lot of craigs list stuff over the years and you will run into 2 kinds of people IMO. #1 think they have a gold mine and want way to much, these people I just walk away. #2 they are happy that somebody drove to their house with cash and offered to buy something they were thinking was worthless and will negotiate on price.

I know I have another pair someplace in a box but I can't find them. if your in need I can PM you when I find them. and to be clear these are the rain seals not the full door seals.
