Seattle206's 2014 SR5 Thread

what made you ditch the 4runner? love your thread, you've made me decide on a prinsu rack(mine came with arb but I wanna park in garage again) and I also have an arb awning. you used rhino rack mounts correct? im only an hour and half south of you.and 2 years ago I did sections 3 and 4 of wabdr with my lifted Subaru. yeah, very easy but I wanna complete EVERY backcountry discovery route in each state. part of my bucket list I guess.

Been a while since I took the silver beast out but I got to play with it in a nice winter storm. Got it stuck a few times due to my bad driving  and for some reason my Ridge Grapplers just didn't get any traction what so ever. I can feel slight fishtailing at almost every corner, regardless of my speed or throttle control. 4lo, ATRAC, it didn't help. They just didn't grip to anything. This is my first time really using these tires in snowy conditions like this. My previous Cooper ATP's handled comparable conditions fairly easily. This was definitely a confidence kicker. Luckily we rolled deep and some great folks was almost ready to dig, guide, and to tow me out. Regardless, I had an awesome time and finally got a chance to use most of my recovery gear.

I think it may be time to ditch my Nittos for something snow rated.

New rubbers, 295/70r17 Cooper ST Maxx 10PLY.

2 year old 285/70r17 Nitto Ridge Grapplers vs the ST Maxx.

Pictures when you get those mounted please. I’m contemplating the exact same change from 285/70 rg as well. Also love the thread

New wheels arrived. FN Five Star in Anthracite Light Gunmetal 17x8.5" -6mm offset. It was a toss between these and the SCS F5's that everybody and their mama's got.

Also managed to blow a hole in my ridge grapplers. Not sure what I drove over but it went right smack into the middle the tread. Done with these tires, shitty traction on slick pavement and not very impressive in fresh, deep snow. They look aggressive but suck in anything but dry terrain, good riddance.

So whats next?

So after having my 295s on for a week I've decided to do a body mount chop. The tires rub at full lock under flex. No rubbing at all from daily driving or during parking situations though. My caster is maxed at 4* while keeping toe/camber within spec. I managed to avoid a BMC after running two different sets of 285s which had zero rub on the obstacles. Ordered the Metal Tech BMC plates so I'll be tackling this job soon.

Looks good. How does the truck feel with the increased weight? I have same size rg and am interest in st max in the 295 as well

Gas efficiency has been the same, no change from the switch over from the RG's. Rides a little more stiff. I feel no difference in power with the 295s.

After owning the 4Runner for over 4 years I finally succumbed to a doing a body mount chop. Previously ran two sets of 285's without any rubbing but after switching to ST Maxx's in 295's the rub at full lock just wasn't cutting it no matter how much you adjust the alignment.

Did it all in 1.5 hours with a buddy and it turned out pretty good for first timers. Very do-able at home if you have any proper sense of handling power tools. Looks like we will end up doing all the BMC's for our buddies Toyotas lol. I used the MetalTech BMC plates.

This thread makes me want to upgrade to 295s...i did the high clearance bumper chop up front, and bmc so I know it’s doable. I’m just worried about gearing, and drivability with the increased weight/rotational mass.

Sweet rig man. I find that my KO2's have the exact same issues you had with the ridge grapplers. Would love to hear your take on the ST Maxx so far in similar situations, if possible.

Thx.

Have 5k on the ST Maxx's, so far they have exceeded my expectations. They grip extremely well on slick wet roads and in snow. Surprisingly, the 295 E loads are giving me better gas mileage compared to the 285 RG C loads.

Completed the Washington Backcountry Discovery Route (WABDR) this past weekend. Took all of Friday through Sunday but we completed sections 5 & 6.

Started in July 2017 and completed in July 2019 with the same core group of friends. Had an excellent time each year and have many fond memories.

600+ miles from the borders of OR/WA to WA/British Columbia.

After owning my 4Runner for nearly 5 years I think it is time to do some changes. A re-gear will definitely be the next major modification.
