The few times I’ve gone. Aside from the time there was a massive truck meet on the trail. There have been only a few groups of people up the trail
The people who were noobs are usually turning around pretty early onto the rd
I have gotten stuck while we waited for a guy to do a 100 point turn in his Chevy 3500 dually.

Haha, funny you posted this because I was thinking about a short trail run in a couple weeks that is below the snow level and should be open. I know it is accessible. I will have to check with the local ranger station to verify and then put a plan together.

4/13 - Sourgrass Trail & Lube Room
Title says most of it. Trail run is about 2 hrs. in and out. Meet time / place in SAC is TBD on who. From SAC, with a stop for gas, it's about 2:15 to the trail head, figure be on the road by 7:30 - 8:00 am. Burgers and beverages at the Lube Room after then roll back down. Who's in?

This coming Saturday, the plan is to meet up and run Sourgrass Trail and afterwards, stop at The Lube Rom for lunch and refreshments. This place has great burgers, fries, onion rings as well as other things.
The plan is to head from SAC and exit at Howe / Power Inn and get onto Hwy 16 heading East. First spot to meet would be at the intersection of Florin Perkins & Jackson Hwy across from Green Acres Nursery at 7:00 am. Meet Up #1. From there, we will continue to head east to Hwy 49 South at 7:15 am. I understand there is someone coming from the Mather area, so the next planned meet would be at Sunrise and Jackson Hwy and hope to be on the road from there by 7:25 am. Drive time to next meet-up and gas is approx 1:40 hrs. to the Kwik Serv in Arnold Meet & Gas. From here, we will head to the trail to air down and have fun which is about 25 minutes.
The Trail Head is at Sourgrass Day use. Trail should be about 2 or so hours in and out. From there, we will air up and hit the Lube Room and then roll back down the hill.
This trail is not the most difficult, but being wet and some rocky sections, I would advise 33" tires and some armor, but there have been some stock rigs to get through most of it. This time of year, there is a stream crossing with a descent water flow.
I have HAM for comms and plan to run 146.460. There is no cell service on this trail.

I haven't been up to our cabin since September but I was in Carson City 2 weeks ago helping my grandma and the snow was at an absurd level throughout the north part of the sierras.
Is it clear near sourgrass already?
Can you report on further up Hwy 4? I know the pass is still closed near Lake Alpine.
We were planning on a trip the weekend after Memorial Day. So May 30, 31. I'd be happy to hit up trails and the Lube Room then if you'll be in the area.

Sourgrass is down about 3,200' elevation, so it's clear. Regarding the pass, I doubt it will be open for Memorial Day unless the temps get hot real soon. I would guess middle to end of June to open pass.
