Talk me out of 255/80R17s??

It is just about time to yank off the snow-tires and I am leaning heavily towards a 255/80R17 over a 285/70R17. Beyond the aesthetics of a skinnier tire, (which I am ok with as these are going on the more narrow TRD-Pro wheel,) and a heavier load rating (which is probably over-kill and could be a detriment to ride quality, acceleration and mileage) is there anything else I should consider? Seems like I will get away with less trimming too...

Why isn't this option more popular?

I just installed 245/75 R17 Falken Wildpeak AT3s on 7.5" wide Sequoia rims. No argument from me.

I wanted a 9" section width, vs 10, and 255/80 17 is not as popular a size and limited selection/more expensive

I'm running 255/75/17, and like it very much. Wider isn't always better. Would have gone 80's but couldn't find the tires I wanted without crazy lead times in that size.

It's my preference but I think the skinnier tire looks better in a lot of cases. Some of the 5th gens I see around local have ill-fitting wheels so they can fit 285s or larger and it just looks out of place.

My next set of tires will be 255/80/17s. They look to be the perfect tire for someone who wants a true 33'' and doesn't want to worry about a BMC. They have been around forever but are only growing more popular on the 5th gen chassis.

Side note, I love your truck. It helped convince me to get the LFD 7/8 rack and go with pizza cutters for my next set. Hope we can run into each other out on the trail sometime!

Add another to the list of 255/80/17 fans! Fill the wheel well with a 2/1.5 lift. I have Toyo AT3s and have enjoyed them so far.

I plan on going from the stock 265/70/17s on TRD stock wheels in the next month or two to 255/80/17s. My 4runner is lifted with a Toytec and JBA UCAs. Last alignment was 4deg and it drives straight as an arrow.

I'm hoping that size fits ok no issues. Bouncing between the Ridge Grapplers and Toyos ATIII.

The E rating concerns me if it's going to be a harsh ride. I've read some keep at 40psi? Unsure and still researching as time permits. Glad this topic came up.

If I could find a tire I liked in that size with load range C, I would seriously consider it. Acceleration is impacted, but I've baby stepped from stock to stock duratracs load range C, and now 285/70R17 load range C Toyo AT3s. Slight impact each time to get up and go but very manageable where I live. My MPGs haven't been impacted measurably from lift or tire size when I account for odometer & speed corrections.

As others have stated, wider isn't always better, and sometimes narrower fits the bill better for grip or breaking through to a more solid layer etc. There's a few videos on the subject.

I doubt you'll have to do any trimming if you keep stock rim / offset. Maybe pull the mudflaps back with a zip tie to the body mount and move the fender liner forward, but that was it for me with 285/70R17s.

I had 255/75/17's (Cooper AT3 4S) installed today. It'll take some time before I can provide feedback of any substance, but on paper they do everything that I want - slightly larger, no additional weight over stock and improved performance. What's not to like?

I think at this point, it is only the load range that has me concerned. I don't tow, the only thing that goes on my hitch is a big bike rack, so I know those stiff sidewalls are going to be a crappy ride, I just don't know if it is enough to get on my nerves...

Reading other discussions on the interwebs I have seen the PSI noted at between 38 and 41 for the most comfortable. Currently I have SLs on mine. Guess I will find out here shortly.

Personally, I would stick to a 285/70-17. Much more selection and ratings. Fits in the spare tire well. If you are way out of town and need a new spare, it is much more likely to find one.
I have Wildpeaks in this size in a SL rated tire and it only weighs 51#’s per tire. They have performed well over a variety of terrain.

I wouldn’t talk you out of them.

255/80 17 E-rated Wildpeaks on Trail wheels work great, especially with 3” OME lift/KDSS. Ride is fine, but a little bumpy at slower speed on concrete surfaces (tires and coils contribute to that). Front fender liner push and trim was needed to eliminate minor rubbing. Very good performance on highway, and steering wobble is gone

I’ve only about 500 miles on this setup and only on pavement, and so look forward to airing down on the trails.

How is the tire noise with those?

255/80r17 Wildpeaks. Noise is no more than the KO2s in stock size I had before, and the 255 width tracks much better than the 265 while driving down the road. I measured the track width between the old/new and 255 was only about 1/4 inch thinner than the 265s. They are E-rated and I do feel more road than before, but after adjusting the tire pressure to 38 psi it was more than tolerable.

I have about 1000 miles on the 255s now and I can't see myself going with another size. I'll take ground clearance over tire width any day.

I have 255/80 17 and……. I love them!!!
My only gripe is I went from 17-19mpg to 14-15mpg, thats it. So far I have 30k on the Toyo MTs I have no regrets

Tire size

I deposited for a 2022 limted not realizing that 20" wheels are not the best for off road. Is there any problem putting 17" wheels on the limited for more appropriate tires for off road?
