Flashing VSC and slip indicator on

Hello everyone. I was driving home on the highway the other day and the VSC On light starting flashing and the slip indicator lamp below it was on. I never seen this happen before.

After a quick stop, I was back on the road. This time the same two lights came on plus the ABS light too.

After my final stop, I got back on the road. This time no lights were on. At least for the 5 miles I drove.

Thoughts?

Btw, I didn't get a chance to plug in my scan tool. Not sure that incident sets any codes.

My truck is a 2008 V6.

An easy place to start is to get it scanned by an ABS-capable scan tool. I think the O'Reilly/Autozone "free scan" services can do that.

I had a similar issue, though I can't remember exactly which lights were coming on, but the solution was new wheel sensors.

Thanks. I'm out of town but I think that will be my next step.
 
I had the same issue with my truck. It was intermittent, the ABS light was the key. I had a failing wheel speed sensor that had to be tripping the light to find it. I also bought a Foxwell code reader that shows ABS codes so I could see which one. Pretty sure that reader can show live data so I could spin the wheel and see it working or not.
 
ABS wheel speed sensor for sure. Like someone already said, get the ABS capable scanner to see which sensor it is.

So it looks like my OBD2 scanner and the OBD Fusion app can read VSC/ABS data.

I drove the truck today but neither the VSC, ABS or slip indicator was on. I did plug in the scanner during my trip and it showed that there were 4 confirmed codes. The codes are C1223, U0123, U0124 and U0126. I also displayed all 4 speed sensors and the FR was reading about 15 mph lower than the other 3 wheels. I also tried to log and graph the data from all 4 sensors while driving.

With those codes, could it still be a speed sensor? Also, would you expect either of the three lights mentioned earlier to be on or is a variance of 15 mph not enough to trigger them?

Appreciate the help as usual.

That sensor reading different MPH than the rest is not right but may not be different enough to set the lights. You could swap it with one of the others to see if it moves. If I remember correctly, there are 2 parts numbers for the 4 sensors on the car so 2 are interchangeable. The 1st graph for the FL doesn't look right either. I would fix the sensor issue first and go from there. I think some of the ABS codes stay until cleared but could be off on that. I bought a 4 pack of cheap sensors from Amazon figuring some should at least work for awhile. The only one I installed is still going a year later.

Those codes sometimes come and go. I would definitely check the RF sensor to see if it's damaged at all or the wiring coming to it from the frame. The variance between the speeds seem to point to that corner.

I've spent way too much money on fixing the ABS issues on truck. The LF wiring from near the ABS block to the hub cost $180 CAD with a discount from the Toyota dealer where I work part time. I wasn't going to get bent over again so I was cheap and bought an Amazon special (most likely made in China) wheel speed sensor. I think it was less than $20 CAD shipped to my door and it fixed my problem.

Thanks for the information. Maybe this is a coincidence, but I did replace the right front bearing assembly around 2 years ago (~40k miles). I'm pretty sure I had to remove the sensor at that time. I just mentioned that since I hear horror stories about removing the sensors on trucks in the rust belt.

I will take a look at that sensor if this issue persists. I definitely don't want to go down the rabbit hole with dealer diagnostic fees. Appreciate the tip on the aftermarket sensors as well. I normally stick with OEM but for a small fraction of the price, I don't see why I wouldn't try an aftermarket one first.

A bit more information here.

I found an historical code when I connect to what OBD Fusion calls the Generic OBD2 module. This is where I would normally go to get MIL engine codes. I have to say that I am not too familiar with checking codes on this truck as I never encountered one in the 100k miles that I have owned it with the exception of an evap code that I caused when I replaced my fuel sending relay earlier this year.

This historical code that I found was P0504. Maybe the brake switch is the root cause of the issue on VSC/ABS side? Clearly the issue is intermittent as there are no lights on currently.

I ended up clearing the 4 codes on the ABS/VTRAC module. I did not clear the historical code on the generic module since it is clearly noted as historical.

So I’ve had the issue with the VSC lights blinking on and off when it got colder out now they’re both on after I had some issues from I had on the highway and I need to do a zero point calibration to fix it.

I doubt the issue is that brake switch but I have been wrong before.
 
I agree with Piggity, my bet is that wheel speed sensor. When it fails hard you get the lights. Mine was also intermittent through a whole winter.
 
I have a 2008 Limited 2WD and had the exact same issue. I replaced my gas cap with OEM and that fixed it permanently. If you scan tool, you see codes related to EVAP.

Not sure if you’re on the right thread here, info for codes was already noted and the gas cap has already been replaced.

When the gas cap seal is bad you will also have the "Check Engine" light on as well.

Since the Check Engine light is not mentioned being on then it can't the gas cap.
 
my money is on the wheel speed sensor, either its failing or got some dirt/crud on it...hopefully it resolves over time, or you take it out and clean it properly


@zguy1 could you confirm the type of obd bt scanner you are using or the amazon link. i had a bafx scanner that also worked great could read abs/sr5 and tranny temps, but its out of stock on amazon now.
