Any advantage of shifting the transmission to neutral while in traffic?

I used to do this because I wanted to feel that I am driving a stick when I shift the A/T transmission lever to neutral at red and traffic. This definitely brings down the RPM.

Would this bring anything good to the trans or bad?

I cannot go with 5-speed due to my wife. So no trans swap.

I can't imagine it would hurt anything nor would you gain anything either. Maybe if you were sitting in heavy traffic for a long long time, might consume less gas but doubt it would be noticeable. If that's the case though, just turn the vehicle off. For purely the fun of pretending to have a stick, I doubt it hurts anything. Just don't roll back hard and throw it into gear.

Don't think it would change much, the fan "might" pull more air at neutral rpm, but not much. Just dont forget its in neutral, mash gas, freak out and drop it in gear lol.

I would think that torque converter takes less stress while the vehicle is in neutral. If the vehicle is in drive with brakes to maintain stationary, the engine-driven impeller would act against a stationary turbine. If the tranny was put into neutral, then the impeller would act on a freely moving turbine. That's my theory. :blah: Might be wrong? Please correct if so.

If anything, it'd be harder on the truck IMO. I think the drive-line surge from multiple engagements of the trans into gear would be more detrimental than the actual "benefits" of shifting it into neutral at stops. How detrimental would it be? I have no idea.

My other truck is an auto and I agree with the drive-line surge. A auto isn't meant for all that shifting, just leave it in gear and let the torque converter do it's job.

Thanks for all the comments. How about the clutches inside the transmission? When you are in D and brake on? Won't it wear out the clutches faster?

The biggest thing you need to worry about in your trans is heat. Smooth shifting is a byproduct of slipping clutch engagement. For conversational purposes, when you are in drive at a stop, you're in 1st gear. The converter then comes in to play, allowing the vehicle to remain in gear, and stopped, without stalling.
