Are there any lift supports for the rear hatch that work in the cold other than OEM?

Ok so i just installed the strong arm lift supports (extra strong lift versions) and they work great. My rear hatch actually opens now without me pushing up on it. It is only about 35 degrees today though so I'll report back when its back in the single digits again.

Anyone ever rebuilt the OEM lift supports? I have no idea how to take them apart or find replacement seals. I seem to remember a 1990's-looking website for someone who would rebuild them for you.

I bought the monroe's off rockauto because of the rave reviews here on the forum. I'd rate them 3.5/5. If they give out, I'll try another brand. I think I paid around $35-40.
They're thinner than the stock ones but fit right in no problem.
They work but can't lift the gate on their own all the way up. They will max out about 3" too low. I can push it up if I need the extra height. If I help it up, it will stay up though. I hit my head last winter because of the old lifts. The monroe's don't lift all that great in the cold but it's better than before. Still holds it up but I need to assist them if I don't want to wait forever for them to do the work.

Just installed the Strong Arm 6815 the other day. Hasn't gone below the 30s so not really cold. Easy to install using existing hardware. Throws the hatch all the way up and it stays there. Time will tell...

I put the Strong Arms on my 98 a couple weeks ago. I drive my bike about 1/3 of my commute in winter and cycle the rest of the of way, so I prefer to have a lift gate that actually...lifts.
On the few really cold (sub 25F) days, the gate will go up about 2/3 to 3/4 of the way and then need to be pushed fully open, where it'll stay. Much as someone mentioned above.
Still way better than the completely shot original struts.

I also just installed the Strong Arms 6815 (added lifting force) on my 2000 T4R. I'm very happy with the results. I open the lift gate the first few inches and the Strong Arms take over lifting all the way up to maximum extension (old OEM ones would stop and hover 3" from the top). The lift gate moves just barely faster than my old OEM ones (doesn't fly up) and requires only slightly more force to initiate closing. I'm on the central CA coast so 30's is cold for us here. Overall I'm very pleased so far (time will tell) but I cannot imagine spending $$ on OEM or installing regular strength Strong Arms...added lift all the way if anyone is contemplating this. Handy tip: put a piece of 2x4" on your floorjack to support the lift gate while swapping out struts that way its very easy to raise/lower to line up the holes...oh and make or order new bushings before you do this because they're probably shot if they're the originals

Anybody have a decent source for the Strongarm 6815? I can only find them for $185 a pair, and there’s no way I’m paying that much for these things. The first page on this thread shows them for $24 each!
I see the 4286 on Amazon for under $50 shipped but I’d rather have the stronger ones (6815), which are currently $185 a pair. They were possibly discontinued since most Google results show not available. Strongarm’s website is AU, so I can’t look them up for the usdm 4Runner or even a Hilux Surf. Their contact page for USA/ Canada customers shows a website and ph# for AVM industries, but neither the website or number work anymore.

That’s the only seller that has an active listing for these in stock for $185 a pair on Amazon. Seems like they’re really price gouging. I guess they’re just on back order so this is just a case of supply and demand.

Have you tried contacting Lift Support Depot directly? They’re in the Vista area. I drove out there last year and bought a pair for under $50. Hope they aren’t discontinued and slowly going out of stock.

I just spoke with Jessica @ Lift Support Depot in Carlsbad, Ca (760) 744-2956. They are a distributor for Strong Arm and sell a lot of these, and they have another 400 on order with Strong Arm. It could be a few weeks since they haven’t even gone into production and they don’t produce them regularly.
While asking about their physical stock on these and the current pricing, she saw that they were $79 and that raised a red flag with her. Apparently they list products that are out of stock higher (admittedly in an attempt to discourage people from trying to buy them). I asked why they would have a listing on Amazon for product that’s not in stock, and she doesn’t have anything to do with their online sales so she didn’t know. She did mention that they are about $50 a pair normally. Hopefully this helps anyone searching for these in the future.
