Tranny Rebuild and Reman Prices, WOW.

Recieved a call from tranny shop today. They informed me my tranny is one of the worst they have seen, and I let them know about the dreaded pink milkshake that had happened previously. They had a few options from $3700.00 for a 3yr 100,000 mi. warranty rebuilt , $3300.00 for a rebuild of my orig tranny with a 12,000 mi, warranty, and a used donor tranny with a 4,000 mi. warranty coming in at $2488.00. My local auto shop quoted me around $2950.00 incl labor and fluid for a Jasper Rebuilt Tranny with a 3 yr, 100,000 mi warranty as well. This looks like the best option other than finding a donor tranny cheap and having someone put it in. 01 and 02 are being a real pain to find tranny's for and you still not entirely sure what your getting. I think I may have to go with the Jasper route. It's almost 1K cheaper than the tranny shops high end rebuilt unit with the same warranty. This officially sucks and I am just hoping my T4R's engine holds out for a long long time after this fix, because putting this much $$$ into a 160,000 mi. vehicle is tough. :) P.S. - BUY, INSTALL, and USE an EXTERNAL ONLY tranny cooler ASAP. This just isn't worth it for a $70.00 part.

wow, that sucks, you should see if anyone on here works at a dealer, i was able to put in a brand new one in from the factory for about $500 cheaper then any shop i was quoted at, this was on my 98 grand cherokee though,
(this works becuase if your took your truck to toyota to have them replace the trans they have to order a new one and if anyone works at a dealer they get a discount @ least thats how jeep worked)

also if your looking at rebuilding look in to a upgraded converter,valve body,and clutch pack stacker.
this will give you much cleaner and powerful shifts as well as make the trans last waaayyy longer.....


there is no way it should be 4K for a trans rebuild considering you can buy a whole truck for 5.5K or so, 2.5K is more the right ball park, everyone knows trans are very expensive but that sounds like a ride, imo, also see if you can find a local yota parts yard (we have nix99 here) and see if they can help you a used trans should be 800-900 maybe a bit more depending on milage.

Yeah, well the guy said the basic tranny overhaul would have been right around $1800.00 or so, but because my overdrive is completely gone and needing the new electrical solenoids, among all the other gears, and bearings, as well as a torque converter was why the cost is so high to rebuild. I can only imagine what the inside of that thing looked like. The shop didn't know I had the pink milkshake prior to today, and I bet they thought what in the hell has this guy done to his tranny!! Still unclear on what I am going to choose, but probably the $2750.00 rebuilt unit with 3yr 100,000 mi. warranty. The only used I found was from a tranny super store so to speak online, and they had an 01 shipped to me for around $1500. I'm not sure if it came with a torque converter, or what a shop would charge to install?? I would likely be right around tow something and that is with no warranty!!
 
Your shop's estimate for a donor tranny is off the charts! I got a "just in case" quote about 4 months ago from a local tranny shop just to see what it would be and my shop would find a 60K or less donor tranny for me, install it and warranty it for 1 year for $1600 OTD.
 
Damnit man! I'm glad I stuck with a 5spd. Luckily I can rebuild it myself.

Now I'll be putting a new transmission in my camry next month. Automatic 1991 w/ 110k on the clock :(
 
ouch! im curious, how did your tranny go out? and with the tranny cooler is it only really neded if you do a lot of towing?
 
i maybe wrong on this as i only know about torqueflite series of trans from the old muscle cars to newer jeeps, the over drive isn't a electronic component it's just another set of clutch packs, and that price you where quoted should cover EVERYTHING NEW, you got any links to the trans your talking about, i can take a look for you and see if i can figure a easier/cheaper way.
 
I agree that the cost is too high. That combined with the typical shop BS (worst we ever saw, normally be much cheaper) makes me think this shop is no different from the rest. The nice thing is that you know a new transmission is needed which makes getting quotes much easier. You already found a brand new transmission with a great warranty for considerably less, so I am probably just reinforcing what's already in your head.

GottaBeTRD: The tranny cooler is a necessary component for automatic transmissions. You can bypass the internal and go to an external only, but you have to have a tranny cooler regardless of usage type.

I havent checked my 96 out, but I have a manual, do I have a tranny cooler too?? Do I need to get an external one??
 
The prices above, the $3700.00 and $2950.00 are not for "NEW" tranny's but rebuilt models with new parts. All prices include torque converter as well. As far as the $1600 dollar quote Brian was quoted above for the used donor with a year warranty, I could only wish. I am having a hard time finding anyone that would come even close to that. I'm at a standstill here with my T4R at Aamco. I did find a shop today that quoted me $2850 for a 3 yr, 100,000 mi warranty rebuilt unit and that includes labor. The problem with that being the truck is already at an Aamco across town, and I don't know what they are going to charge for the inspection work they have already done, plus the 30 mi tow they gave from my local shop to the town where the Aamco is at. Adding that into the price of the new shop's quote may bring me closer to the $3700.00 Aamco wants already, so it may not be worth the hassle. Arghgh!!! It's crazy to think about dropping $3700 dollars into a truck I bought for 6K!!!

man you just got to do some more digging i'm sure that you can find a used unit somewhere in the country for 1K or so and install that, get on craigs list and start searching and start calling around to the yota junk yards, your only going to get reamed if you let these shops do the foot work for you, they find a trans for 1K mark it up a few hundred dollars for their time then rape you on a labor. that's why it's costing so much find your own used tranny then find someone to help you install it or a good shade tree guy to do teh labour for you on the cheap.

I see used trannies (many with warranties) on ebay and CL go for $500-1000 all the time. A shop rate of say, $85/hr x's 8 hrs is $680 and that's a fair amount of time to swap a tranny. I'm not sure where you're looking but try making some phone calls to some salvage yards.
 
I had a shop quote me right around $450.00 to install a used or rebuilt tranny that I would bring in. The only problem with this is the fact I will be getting no warranty of any kind. And I have searched within 275 mi of home, as well as Ebay, and I have only found 1 tranny from transmissionplanet which was right around $2200 shipped. This was a rebuilt trans with torque converter and a 2 year unlimited mileage guarantee. The 01 and 02 transmissions are not growing off trees in the wrecking yards unfortunately. :) On a goofier note, I am now in the process of trying to get my truck from Aamco, because I am not going to pay 900 more dollars than the next guys rebuilt 3yr 100k mile warranty tranny. Stressful afternoon for sure.

that price just seems very high, to me for a rebuilt unit. i'll have a look around and see if i can do better,

The multi-mode runners have different A340F trannies than the non m.m. A340F runners. I know the filter looks different between the two. I'm not 100% sure that they are incompatible, but I don't think it will jive with the ECU if you don't get the same exact tranny.

my understanding was is that there is only 2 kinds of tranny's in the 3rd gens

the 340f and the 340E i think the letter at the end designates what it really is being model number 340 and the would mean Electronic and H for hydraulic not sure what the F would stand for, and i can be completely wrong before but the transmissions i've dealt with in the past are set up like that
