1999 Toyota 4Runner 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 123000 miles
I would assume rebuilding prices are not the same in all parts of our great country, but in Fort Worth, TX at Transmission Masters, it just cost me a little over $2,100 for an overhaul and replacement of the Convertor. The problem started with some days placing the 4Runner in drive, and it felt like it was trying to move out 3rd gear, if I pulled it down to low, it seemed OK. I went to a local transmission repair shop to have the fluid replaced. They said after looking at the fluid it appeared burned. They checked the system, and found no codes, and they couldn't duplicate the problem. But, after seeing the fluid, they recommended a removal and inspect of the transmission. When inspection was completed, they said the Torque Convertor needed replacing and based on the burned fluid the system most likely over heated. They recommended replacing the convertor and obtaining a used Main Control Value body and rebuilding it. I decided that while it was out of the 4Runner to go ahead and do a complete overhaul. Got it back on Thursday and it ran OK. On Friday at about 70 miles an hour it started vibrating, slowed down it was OK for awhile. On Saturday drove the truck about 10 miles round trip, no problems. About an hour later, on a second trip the vibration started at about 40 or 50 miles an hour, I pull over to the side of the road, raced the engine, but it didn’t appear that the engine was causing the vibration. I have no idea, but I'm thinking convertor? Has anyone had this problem?
