Little plastic cover by the shift lever

So there's a little square hole about 1/2" by 1/2" by the shift lever. I noticed the cap for this spot in the glove box. Is it okay to just pop that in, or should the dealer do it. There are intstructions that say it needs to happen during some type of vehicle testing. I don't have the exact instruction handy. This was obviously forgotten when the vehicle was prepped. Also, does anybody know what this little cap does?

Shift Lock Override

I think you are referring to the cover for the shift lock override button. This button is depressed (with a scredriver or the like) if you have a problem shifting even while the brake pedal is depressed.

Just pop the cover back on.

Thank you for the fast response. I've been driving the truck without this little cover for 1500 miles. I haven't had a problem shifting at all. Should I have a problem without the cover in place? I guess I don't understand why it's needed...or not needed...

It's just a cover. I would put it back on to prevent dirt and garbage from getting in the hole. The override is there just in-case an adjustment is needed. I'd be willing to bet that none or very few people on this forum have had to use it.

The slot it is supposed to cover is to allow you to shift the trans out of park into neutral in case you have to push or tow the vehicle because you can't start it. You insert a key or a screwdriver into the slot to disengage the shift lock. Normally, you can't shift the trans out of park unless the vehicle is running, and you depress the brake pedal. The cover is only for cosmetic purposes, and it will not effect how the vehicle works if it isn't in place.

Thanks guys

I popped the cover on last night and all is well! I was just concerned by the warning sticker in the bag with the cover. It said to install during "P.D.S. operation".

Now I know what to do in case of an emergency tow if the car won't start.

I believe P.D.S. stands for Pre-Delivery Service. The dealer procedure to prep new vehicles prior to delivery to the customer.
Apparently, the service procedure wasn't completely finished on your ride.

Mine popped off last night while I was routing the cables for my Sirius tuner through the center console. I can not get it to go back on. I found it in the floor board but it just doesn't seem to want to go back in. It's almost like something broke. Any ideas?

Mine didn't have the little cover when I bought it used. I checked with the stealership but they wanted approximately $20 for the plastic cap. I've driven without it for 2 years with no problems.

My used 4Runner didn't have it either. I had to figure out the part number and I think I just ordered it on partznet. Finding the # was the hardest part, by far.

i have the part. i just need to get it back on. It doesn't snap on. I can't see where it could have broken plastic somewhere. Am I missing something here?

while putting everything together, if parts are misaligned, or not screwed in evenly, little POS parts like this won't click in properly. Make sure everything is aligned/flushed/screwed in evenly, and it should fit in (unless something broke due to stress while you were taking stuff off.

i will try again tonight. i checked last night and everything seemed to be installed correctly. when i attempt to install the cover, it just 'floats' over the black spring loaded release that it is covering and just moves around freely without connecting to anything. Hmmm. Thanks Audi.

No freakin' way!!!!

My '06 didn't have the cover when I bought it. Went to the dealership and bought it for less that a buck. If your dealer is asking for $20, I say find another dealer. If not, and you still want one, lemme know.

It shouldn't touch the black release. It snaps onto the surrounding silver trim. Maybe something is broken? Would a picture help?
