long story short; insurance totaled my '07 Sport w/ v8 so now we're currently in talks regarding the settlement check. i did some searching for a new vehicle and i found a near exact same truck as mine. however the difference is the engine itself as well as the premium accessories.

current truck had cargo mats, nettings, and toyota brand kit (you never know!)

potential truck does not have premium equip. accessory, has a v6 engine with approx 3-4k miles more than my current one. comes with stock radio that'd be swapped out if i ended up buying it. the salesperson also indicated they'd get me whatever is missing in regard to accessories but i doubt they actually confirmed it came with the truck so i'm going to go out of town to check it out in person tomorrow


how do you guys feel about v6/v8 engines for Sport edition?

V8!!!! The 4.0 isn't bad, but if you are already accustomed to the V8 I personally wouldn't want to step down to the V6

Toyota doesn't make v8 4Runners anymore. Get another one while you can!

I've owned 2 x 4.0 V6's over the last decade and I'm more than happy with the engine and the gas mileage. The real question is, do you tow anything? I rarely ever tow anything, and nothing more significant than a small trailer, so I am perfectly fine with the V6. If you tow a boat or anything of size, you really should go for an 8. If you don't tow, take the extra gas mileage and go with the V6. That' show I look at it, sorry to hear about your last 4Runner

I have a v8 gx470 (lexus branded 4runner) and a v6 t4r sr5. V6 is quick and nible, never wanted for acceleration or power. v8 is nicer is a lot of ways but not necessary for DD use. if you intend on using this on the trail and putting huge tires and steel bumpers on it then hold out for a V8, otherwise I think V6 would be just fine.

I chose the v6 cause it's my DD, most I'll tow is a trailer helping folks move stuff, and timing chain instead of belt.

v8 grunt is addicting tho.

The sound alone is worth any mpg difference. With its modified exhaust, my truck sounds better than most muscle cars or sports cars. That may not apply to you, but my brother has an FJ, and for what we have used our modded vehicles for, we don't see any benefit with the V6, mpg wise or other.

One of the best motors Toyota ever made was their 4.7 V8...negligible MPG difference with the V6 (~1-2) and the sound, towing ability (you never know when you need to tow if you don't do it regularly), and the durability of the V8 is the reason why I chose this setup...I have zero regrets and as a DD, it's badass in ways the V6 wants to be...however, power output is roughly the same but if you have tires or armor, it's sure nice having that additional amount of torque to keep that smile on your face. Plus, the transmission is perfectly paired (at least better) with the V8 over the V6...

Moral of the banter, go with the V8 and you will never look back with the woulda-coulda-shouldas....

You're definitely going to miss the V8!

I'm the same. I have the 4.0L V6.
I love the gas mileage for daily driving to work...
and the engine does just fine when I tow my 5'x8' trailer.

V8 feel so much better once you add a bit of weight to them

The gas mileage is a big difference. We have both. Both 4x4's. Even before my lift and rack it was a big difference. And my tires are only 265/70/17.
We tow every weekend about 1500lbs. Her's tows as good while getting better mileage.
With that said both at almost 240k and have been great. I do like the v8 but the full time 4wd takes away from gas mileage and throttle response.

as someone who tows things next to never, and doesn't want the hassle of a timing belt, i am very glad I went with the v6.

I love my V6, I'm on my second one and it runs like a dream
