the reason you don't see a lot of failed timing belts is because everyone on this board is weird and we all change them every 90-100k.

there's no debate it's just preventative maintenance.. they both aren't fun to do but its a big thing to look out for.. it's obviously great yours has lasted that long, but you should take care of it before something bad happens and ends up costing you a whole lot more in the long run...

The gas mileage is a big difference. We have both. Both 4x4's. Even before my lift and rack it was a big difference. And my tires are only 265/70/17.
We tow every weekend about 1500lbs. Her's tows as good while getting better mileage.
With that said both at almost 240k and have been great. I do like the v8 but the full time 4wd takes away from gas mileage and throttle response.

The timing belt from my old Camry (non-interference) was hung on the shop wall after lasting 325K which was a new record for the shop.

as someone who tows things next to never, and doesn't want the hassle of a timing belt, i am very glad I went with the v6.

I am in a similar situation. I am currently moving out of a small four-door and planning on getting a 4runner. I have it narrowed to a '06 v6 sport 2wd and an 04 (less miles)4x4 limited. I am leaning toward the limited because I would love to have 4x4 (live by the beach and have friends that wheel). However, the 06 has an IMPECCABLE service record (oil every 5k on the dot, scheduled maintenance, one owner and all at the same dealership)

If it wasn't for the V8, I'd be in a 5th Gen right now. I thought long and hard before I got my 2008, but I knew how much I liked the torque in my previous 2006. While I do like the interior and many other aspects of the facelift 5th Gens, I just couldn't choose those likes over the V8 engine. I'm a fan of this engine, but they are getting harder to find good ones. It takes a while to get to the 90-100k miles timing belt service and while the timing belt is expensive, it's just not something you'll have to do very often by any means.
