Rear window busted by defroster...read here!

I got a letter from Toyota today. They have extended the warranty on my truck until April 30, 2018 in the event of the shattered rear window as a reslt of the defroster. I have a 2008 so i'm assuming that plays in on the date. However, if you have had the issue and paid to have it fixed, toyota claims they will reimburse you. of course you have to have proof of the repair and some pretty basic informaiton (mileage at time of service, vin number on proof of service, and a receipt) fortunately i have not had the issue but wanted to share.

i did search and went back a few pages and didn't see that anyone had posted about this so figured i'd share. hopefully it helps a few of you folks that have had the issue. best of luck

I'm the second owner of my 4Runner, bought from CarMax. Is there a number I can call to get my money back. My rear window busted too after using the rear deforest, it's fixed now but I still want my money back lol

there is. it's 1-888-270-9371

you can also update the owner information of the vehicle at www.toyota.com/ownersupdate

you will need the full VIN to do so

good luck!

Did you try "Rear Hatch Glass Shattered" when you searched?

TSB-0189-17 "Rear Hatch Glass Shattered"

But yes, now would be the time to get reimbursement for a shattered rear defroster.

Thanks. I did register the 4Runner on the Toyota owners website when I purchased it. No mail yet so far. But I will call them. Thanks again.

If you have already replaced the rear window more than likely it was replaced with the same inferior parts. Therefore if it happens to break again I am sure it will be covered. They are just now starting to roll out the updated parts.

If someone has already had their rear hatch window break and had it replaced and then gets reimbursed by Toyota, and then it breaks again due to the updated parts not being available the first time I doubt Toyota will replace it for free since they had already reimbursed for the first breakage, but on the other hand they may do another replacement but I sorta doubt they will.

I believe they have to since it's a safety recall.

It's not a safety recall or the government would have mandated it as a safety recall long ago, it's a Warranty Enhancement Program initiated by Toyota over concerns on customer satisfaction.

How can I make this happen? I got the letter but am worried it won't break until after the warranty period is over.

The only way to possibly make the window break and still be covered is to leave the rear defroster on all the time, if you do something to deliberately break the window you may be out of luck if they see no evidence of the electrical connectors causing the breakage, but if you have my luck it would never break and then the Warranty Enhancement Program would end and then the next time you really needed to use the defroster the window will break!!

This is unfortunately true and I confirmed it with an FTS when he was over at our dealership.

Has to basically be "glass shattered after I turned on defroster" as the TSB states otherwise it's not covered under the warranty enhancement.
