Please Humor Me: Is This the 4th Gen A/C Condensation Drain?

I got the Toyota evap cleaning kit and while I know this little hose under the hood dripping water must be the condensation drain, my cautious side says, “Hey, why not ask before blasting a whole can of cleaner up in there?”

So this must be it, right?

yep, it is, go ahead and blast away!

just curious though, what are you supposed to achieve by blasting a cleaner into the drain hose?...is it to prevent blockages??

The dreaded Bossman link list, which I seek to avoid at all costs lest I appear to be a clueless newb. ;-)

I searched with no luck, in the forum and on Google, using a variety of relevant terms. Not sure how I didn’t get at least one of those. In fact, I was quite surprised. I kept getting 3rd & 5th Gen threads on here despite specifying 4th Gen in the search bar.

[MENTION=78511]earthrealm[/MENTION], others who have done it say all kinds of gunk comes out, which isn’t surprising given that the “youngest” 4th Gen is now 10 years old and that the target area is often warm & moist. Cleaner components work better, last longer, and in this case, yes, it should also help prevent blockages. That’s always good considering a blocked drain usually leaks onto the passenger side carpet.

What kind of cleaner are you planning on using? I think our drain line is clogged a bit. Not nearly as much condensation puddle under car as I would expect, and occasionally the passenger floor is wet and warm (was soaking after long road trip). Are you doing just simple green, or a pressurized can of something?

Your frame doesn't look rusty but you might consider rerouting or extending it so it doesn't drip onto your frame.

Your frame doesn't look rusty but you might consider rerouting or extending it so it doesn't drip onto your frame.

Just did this last week. Super easy and it's nice seeing that water dripping under my truck and not on the frame any longer.

Wow, I didn’t even know a cleaning kit existed for that! My daughter’s Camry has what I believe is a blockage already based on some of those past threads on the “wet passenger rug”. I wonder if this can fix a blockage that’s already there and flush it out? I may have to get some for my 4Runner as well, even though I don’t have a problem yet. I’m definitely going to take that suggestion of rerouting the line away from the frame as well. I always thought that was a poor place for it to drip...

I plan to do exactly that after the cleaning. Hoping to use the tubing that came with the kit but I can get whatever I need. I never realized Toyota had designed the drain this way (i.e., so poorly) until recently.

Exactly! I did as my frame was badly rusted under passenger door from what I believe was years of that drip on frame. See my Garage for info.

That's where I blasted mine. I recommend pinching the drain tube around the hose you're going to shove up there. Mine started firing cleaner back down it before the can emptied. Have a container of some sort to catch the stuff that comes out of it.

Did the cleaner today and was a bit underwhelmed, but I suppose it’s a good thing when a ton of disgusting gunk doesn’t come out of your HVAC system. To anyone considering this, I’d say save your time & money for something else unless you’re having symptoms like A/C odors or a blocked drain.

I used this kit on Saturday and the draining fluid looked a little yellow, just like in the photo above. There was a strong ammonia smell from the foam, so I think it is meant to be only an antimicrobial agent for treating musty smells.

The second can, which one is instructed to spray 45 seconds during three different vent settings, only lasted for two 45 second bursts. Reduce the spray time to 30 seconds if you want to use it for all three vent positions.

This kit completely eliminated the musty smell from my AC system. For how long? We'll see.
