Flange Nut Styles

If you keep your existing OEM 4th gen CV axles and rebuild, you will need to use the older style flange nut (90178-28002), castle cover (43525-35010), and cotter pin (95381-04045). Some mechanics suggest replacing the cotter pin whenever you replace the CV axle, since it is a critical safety component.

If you install new OEM 5th gen CV axles, you will need to use the newer one-time-use flange nut (90177-A0023), which is staked in place and does not use a cotter pin.

The difference between 4th gen and newer 5th gen CV axles can be identified by looking at the threaded end. The newer 5th gen CV axles will have a groove cut out.

Reboot Kit

The only difference between the reboot kits for the 4th gen and 5th gen is one of the boots for the 5th gen is different, and supposedly more robust.

Grease
90999-94187 (dark for outer boot)
90999-94250 (tan for inner boot)

The reboot kit comes clamps, and two types of grease. According to Toyota mechanics and online posts, nobody has ever got a straight answer from Toyota on which grease goes on the inside boot and which grease goes on the outside boot. According to one TSB for Camry, "Toyota CV greases are now the same color, inboard/outboard, but are still different and should not be mixed up."

Still researching this. Will edit when I find a definitive answer.

Tan grease = inner boot
Dark grease = outer boot

It's very important to pay attention to the amount of grease specified in the repair manual. You may need a small weigh scale measure out the correct amounts of grease for each boot.

Front Knuckle Grease Cap

When removing the metal cap from the wheel hub, take your time. It can take quite a while to separate from the hub, without destroying the cap or putting a hole through it. This is a critical component which keeps water from getting into the axle and flange nut. Use light taps all around the edge with a flathead screwdriver, and some rust blaster will usually do the trick. Took me 10 minutes to get each one off. I had to tap, rotate, tap, rotate, all the way around, about 10x on each cap. Also be careful not to ding the mounting surface of the hub. The screwdriver can slip sometimes.

Brake Notes

Cleaning Rust

Some mechanics use an abrasive grinder wheel to clean up the hub. Car Care Nut does not. He suggests using only a simple wire brush to knock the rust off. If you use a grinder wheel and get too aggressive on cleaning, you can create micro waves in the surface of the hub. This is not good, because the rotor needs to sit flat against the hub.

Silicon Based Lube

Use silicon based brake lube for rubber components, such as slide pins and piston seals. Some types of brake grease used on shims and other areas of the caliper will degrade rubber components.

Lube Application for Slide/Guide Pins

Do not use too much lube on the slide/guide pins. The pins should not push back out easily, when you press them in. Many people use too much lube on these pins.

Lube Application for Anti-Rattle Clips

Some mechanics apply brake grease between anti-rattle clips and caliper. Care Care Nut does not do this.

Akebono Brake Pads
ACT976 (Front)
ACT606A (Rear)

Akebono parts website shows both pads fit 2004 to 2024.

Akebono's website used to list ACT606 and ACT606A as compatible rear pads with 5th Gen 4Runners. Now, their website only lists ACT606A as being compatible. ACT606 appears to be discontinued as it no longer appears on the Akebono parts website. The only difference between these two pads is ACT606 had a built in wear indicator, and ACT606A does not.

Akebono pads come with shims, anti-rattle clips, and wear indicator / squeeler clips. Be sure to remove the shims and apply a light coat of brake lubricant between the shims and the backside of the pads. The lube helps absorb vibration.

For 5th gen brakes, Toyota factory only installs one wear indicator clip per caliper. For the front pads, the wear indicator clip is installed on the inside pad, on top. For the rear pads, the wear indicator clip is installed on the inside pad, on the bottom.

Thank you for posting all of this great info. I wanted to get your opinion on why I am having a steering wheel wobble from 40-50mph and pull to the left, after installing the 5th gen CV Axle assembly on front left, (43430-60083).

I had a trusted mechanic install the CV axle, and new Toyota Lower Control Arms. Also new alignment bolts, cams, etc. This is an old school alignment shop so they also aligned it.

I will also add that the vehicle has fairly new Michelin LTX Defender 2s, that I have swapped sides to check that, balanced again as well. In addition, I had Toyota OEM front wheel bearings assemblies and hubs installed about 9 months ago.
The wobble and pull to the left happened after the recent install of LCAs and 5th Gen CV axle.

What would be your guess? And what would you start looking at? I have taken the vehicle back to the shop and they are sincerely wanting to get this fixed, but they recommended doing a full front to back wheel rotation and bring it back after that. I'm at the point of ordering the specific CV Axle for my 4Runner, (43430-60062) and having that installed. I am also thinking of going to a decent local dealer and pay the $129 for their alignment as well.
