Can the 4Runner handle a Motorcycle carrier? Attaches to hitch

Can a 04 SR5's hitch handle this? I'd be loading a dirtbike onto it. Will I run into any problems? Can the 4runner handle this?

Your Runner should easily be able to haul that Bike Carrier. I have been reading a great deal about the towing capabilities of the Runner and the documentation states that the hitch is rated for a 700lb tongue weight. The carrier that you are looking at is only rated to haul 400lbs. Furthermore, unless your bike is a 650 or larger, you are probably closer to 300lbs.

Bottom line, this should be easy for your Runner.

You should be fine as long as you keep your bike and the carrier pretty light. The 4Runner uses a Class III hitch so it's good for 500lbs. As long as your bike and the carrier don't exceed this, you should be fine.

As long as you don't exceed the tongue weight rating you should be OK. You will experience rear sag. You may want to install air bags if you intend to take long trips. There are a couple members here that have this set-up. You may want to do a search!

thanks for the replys. I've found a couple members with the setup, but they have v8s, which I believe has a higher tongue weight capacity.

I have the v6, and also, forgot to ask, when I am hauling this, do I need to put it in 3rd gear? Meaning NOT in overdrive? I have a 4speed Auto.

I doubt the extra 500lbs will make a huge difference. I think the advice of taking it off overdrive is when you're towing something significantly heavier, but it also can't hurt to drive it off overdrive.

For this light a load put it in D. This is no different than having two heavy people in the back seat. Just do it and dont worry so much. You won't even know it is there. I regularly tow about 4,500 pounds with about 350# tongue weight with my '06 V6 2WD. The T4R does it like there is no difference.

Hanging 500 lbs off the hitch is like having a 5K lbs trailer on the suspension. You won't have any issues with the OD but you will be putting all that weight on the hitch.

Before we got our toy hauler I had full gear behind the front seats and my CRF450 on a rack on the hitch. It only squated it a tad and I was still safely able to drive at normal speeds. In otherwords, no problem.

Now, I am towing 5500 pounds, going much slower, and getting 6-9 MPG. Tradeoff!

Can't wait to sell her to get a truck, although for what it is, the 4runner tows pretty darn well.
