Synthetic oil on a 20,500 mile motor

Hello all,

New to the forum!

Wife and I just bought a '05 4Runner with 20,000 miles on it. I live in a colder climate (North Idaho) and will be moving to Alaska in a few years.

My question is, can I drain this oil and start using synthetic oil (Mobil 1)? I will be in a much colder climate soon. I am not sure if it will harm the motor to go from conventional oil to a synthetic oil.

Aslo, what viscosity should I use?

No problem -- just change it. If you're using Mobil 1, then use the same weight as conventional oil (5W30, IIRC). The owner's manual tells you the right weight.

You can also use 5W-20. There is a TSB out stating it is ok to use but for the life of me I Can not find it with the search function. Before I switched I even called my local dealership service dept. and they told me it is what they run in there bulk lines now and they put it in anything 2000 and above.
I have been running it in my 04 for about 3 changes now about 18k miles total 6000 miles per change with no problems, 88k total on the 04. I also put in in my 08 @ 2000 miles and again @ 5k and 10k. No problems there either.
